Topic Dog Boards / Health / How long for fur to re-grow?

Hi,

Izzy still has a bald patch on her back from the epidural for her op 8 1/2 weeks ago, how long do you think it will be before it starts to come back through? It still looks the same as it did when we collected her from the Vet, the coat on her leg is coming along nicely

Any thoughts? :)

Anyone

Izzy is still bald and it's now 11 weeks post surgery, will she need to have a good moult and coat change before we see any fur coming through

Hi Denise,

When Storm had his op (cryptorchidic) a looong inscision.... it certainly took him til his next coat blow, then it grew back like wild fire :)
Hope this helps x

edited to say:
Im trying to remember what the time frame was.. I know he always blows at Crufts time (I remember that year as Melly was moaning  Delly was entered, and I was sympathising)
I *think* his op was December, so yep a good 3 months.

Thanks, HG

Well, it looks like we're beginning our 1st proper moult at last, so hopefully that'll get it sorted :)

When my bosses dog had a hip replacement done at the beginning of the year it took ages for the hair to grow back, and even when it did there was a small patch that stayed hairless for a while. Its all completely grown back now.

Hah, found this paper today and it has Izzy written all over it - they even used labs in the study. An analysis of canine hair re-growth after clipping for a surgical procedure

Hi Lori,

Thanks for looking that out  it certainly is correct information for the hair growth on her leg, but if you look here, at these pictures of Izzy, you'll see that the patch on her back is still very bald  and these were taken a couple of weeks ago,

If you are worried I'd ask the vet for a thyroid test.
As thyroid disfunction can cause poor/very slow hair re-growth
after being shaved for surgical procedures etc.

Oh my, that is very bald! I think I'd be getting out the minoxidil. :-D Seriously, that is strange how that area has no growth at all. I'd would be asking my vet about it.
- By chocymolly [in] Date 29.05.07 13:33 UTC
Whats minoxidil

As you can see, I'm not really worried about the leg, nor would I imagine there to be a thyroid problem judging by the hair growth on the leg, it just seems odd that the the other patch has nothing  other than the coat is soooo much thicker here than on her leg, :)

baldness remedy

Oh right, just had a look!..................do you think I could get her some on her M&S insurance   :D

Do you have an OH with an obvious scalp? :-D You could buy it as a prezzie for him and secretly use it on Izzy's bum. :-D
- By chocymolly [in] Date 29.05.07 17:11 UTC
Hehe, no, he has a full head of hair :D just going a bit grey at the sides now :D

Try bob grasses skin cure friend says it would grow hair on a billiard ball!!
Or there's cornucresine a horses hoof treatment that also is used in hair regrowth..
Buy it from any tack shop etc. It's in a plastic red container a bit like a polish tin.
the stuff is gooey and goes on real easy smells a little aniseedy.

With the thyroid you'd be surprised I have a bitch that is classic hypothyroid,
no outward symptoms only 2 daughters have been diagnosed with Hypo-t one at
a very young age and then the second a year ago borderline hypo-t.
Vet thought I was nuts having bitch tested (I wanted her done as very concerned that 2 in a litter down with
hypo-t, it's not something my breed is routinely tested for either) as she looked so well etc.
Blood test came back as classic a case of hypo-t as you can get.
Vet was very shocked! and wouldn't have believed blood results went with my bitch had she not taken
them herself

Bob Grass stuff is mail order, the ads are normally in the dog papers, at the back.
The website is here http://www.bobgrass.co.uk/product.html

This is what you want to look for with the cornucresine (photo of what the tub looks like)

Good luck!

A longer and thicker coated breed than yours - one of mine was shaved off on both sides and under carriage for an ultra sound and it took around 4/5 months for signs to disappear completely.  OTOH, another I had previously had an area (around the palm of hand size) shaved on centre back and it took over a year for the coat to fully merge in!

regards, Teri

My Bitch had 3 shaved areas on her flank, she was in early whelp and the pups are now 3 months old and fur just growing back. Had lots of tests (my vet is a refferal dermatologist) and all negative, eventually put down to hormonal/seasonal changes. wasn't quite sure I believed him but sure enough now she has bum fluff covering the areas.
