Topic Dog Boards / General / Walking incident help please

Hi there

I'm wondering if you can help me help a friend with some advice about an incident that happened yesterday please?

He was with his son walking their 2 young dogs in a field when out of the blue a bullmastiff came and attacked his male dog.  The mastiff was not on a lead or muzzled and was with two young boys who weren't big enough to control a dog that size anyway, they didn't have a lead for it either.
Luckily his dogs are ok and his son and himself are as well apart from being very shaken, because they were quite close to home they were able to make a run for it and get back safely.

Now we've told him to report it to the police but he doesn't know who the lads were who had the mastiff, his son thought they might be some new people who moved here recently, also he's thinking what can the police do.  When he shouted at the lads they said they didn't realise anyone else walked in the field.

Do you think it's worth reporting or not?

Thanks
Paula

I certainly would report it to the dog warden who can keep an eye out while on their rounds and have a word if they see them.

How could they not have a lead, as surely they would have had to walk their dog to it?

I didn't think of the dog warden, i'm hopeless, thanks.

Well the only reason i can think of them not having a lead is because of where the field is.  It's situated at the back of lots of houses and many people have a gate leading off their back gardens straight into the field.  If my friends son is right then they've moved into a house right at the bottom of it so maybe this is the case.

We have fields at the back of us as well but i always take my lot on their leads and then let them off, i like the back up of having a lead with me just in case.

Also it can become a problem if people let their dogs into the field straight from their garden in the dogs being Territorial thinking it belongs to them.

What a stupid thing to say they didn't think anyone else used the field

I totally agree our Lurcher thinks the field at the back of us is his, but he is a big softie and wants to play with anything in there, cows included :D  We change our lots walks now so they don't get to used to one place.  Usually my hubby goes with our friend to walk our pup our friend lives by hubby's Mum, i'm just glad he was at work.  Hubby has said he won't walk round there again after that.

It's just so irresponsible letting the kids go out with a dog which they were to small to control (unless they didn't know of course)

Our dogs think that the field next to our house is theirs :D :D :D Particularly as we have a gate into the field which OH uses when he is trimming the field side of our hedge - so Bramble, in particular, is used to just wandering in and out of our garden into the field :) :)
