I pay my gas bill by direct debit monthly and normally pay £39.50 a month (for 2 of us who arent at home during the week as we both have full time jobs)

Anyway they have done a review on my account and have decided that I need to pay £61.00 for the next 9 months! I just cant afford that much. I've offered to pay £45.00 because that is more of a reasonable fee but they've said they cant change it. Is there any way I can pay what I want to pay because I think its way too much! And its not as estimate!

You could come off direct debit and save the money each month in a building society account.  There may still be a difference between the direct debit discount and the interest but if it suits you better........

It just seems a bit jump from 39.50 to 61! I know they have to reclaim their money but its just too much :(

Oh you mean you have a debt to them at this point?  If that is the case, personally, I would cut right down on all other expences, get this paid off as they suggest and then request a drop back to a regular figure that will match your usage.  I hate being in debt it always ends up costing more than it was worth.

My Gas usage is about £50 a month, and I don't heat during the day and from first of May to first of October other than the odd cold morning.

Heat comes on at 3pm and off at 10pm when I do heat and just the cooker apart from that and combi boiler for the water too.

If I were you I would immediately cancel the direct debits, then phone them and inform them you cannot possibly afford to pay what they are asking.  Ask if you can have payment cards, they should allow this and agree with you how often and how much you can pay, tell them that you will try and pay extra when and if you can to reduce the debt, dont let them bully you, it's not as if your saying that you wont pay back the money, as long as you are offering to pay a little more, rather than what they are demanding I'm sure they will accept this. You have to be assertive but not rude, just stress how difficult and impossible it is for you to make the payments they have suggested.
Who are your gas suppliers by the way?

That would be an ideal solution Tashina! Im with Gritish Bass!

Either that or ask to go onto a key meter and then you are only paying for what Gas you use and they can deduct a bit off each week??

Hi Tracey

I am with them too, so I know they do supply cards as I have them myself as I would not pay by direct debit, but wanted to pay monthly or you can pay 2 weekly rather than quarterly.  I then pay the amount agreed or sometimes extra.
Dont let them fob you off with any other way of paying, they will want you to continue with direct debits but just be firm and say you cannot afford to have any more rising direct debits from your account.
