Hi there,

Has anybody heard of the autoimmune disorder nodular peniculitis? My golden retriever died from it in April this year at the age of 2. Please let me know any info.

Thanks a lot.

Nodular panniculitis: a skin disease characterized by nodules of inflammation under the skin.

Quote: Nodular panniculitis: Multiple lumps (like marbles beneath the skin) over the back and along the sides. Lumps open and drain, then heal by scarring.

There's some brief information about the condition here.

Thanks for the reply. I was just wondering if anybody else had a dog which has suffered from nodular panniculitis. Kiri was only 2 when she died in April  this year. It all started after she was spayed - she became lame and had fits before dying.

She was a golden retriever and I was wondering if they are more likely to get this than other breeds. We have just bought another golden puppy - he is 8 weeks old and his name is Louis.

What a shame and so upsetting for you :(

Have you been in touch with the breeder to let them know what happened to her  ?

So how is the new pupster doing ? Where did you get the lad from , the same breeder ?

I did try and contact the breeder when she first got it and she didn't seem very bothered.
The puppy is lovely. We wouldnt have dreamed of getting him from her agin!

Was she KC registered ?

Thanks.

Yes she is Kc registered and I've checked the pedigree and all seems well. Maybe she had never heard of this horrible disorder. She isn,t available on e-mail and after the unhelpful conversation I had with her a year ago, I'm not overkeen on talking to her again.

From what little info we have seen googling it would seem a very unusual condition so unlikely to be hereditary.  I don't understand how it is the dog died as it doesn't give the impression of being a fatal condition?

From what I've read over 90% of affected dogs make a complete recovery.

For what it is worth I'd never heard of it before and I've been in Goldens for 26 years (have been a breed club member for as long as well) and have had 10 Goldens in total. (And I've also had 3 Golden crosses.)
Edited to say: I also worked as a vet nurse for 4 years and never saw it then.
