As some of you know we recently Lost Our Lovely Ned to Cancer he was only 4 years ten months old.
Ned was insured and we were able to claim most of the vet bills back minus the excess but what I thought I would warn people of was this.
Obviously no amount of money takes the pain of the loss of a dog away and if he wasnt insured the money would have been paid by us but I noticed when the insurance settled the claim there was no mention of the sum insured ie: the cost of the dog, this the price you have paid for your dog as a pup which as people know Pups are quite a lot of money to buy ,normally well at one time this would be included in the final settlement but as it wasnt I rang up to enquire about it,I was told that yes that was covered but a lot of people dont bother to claim it as they are too upset.
Well of course people are upset and in that state they may not realise that the price is included in the cover and if they may want to buy another pup the money is theirs to claim.
Anyway just thought that really the insurance companies could be reaping a lot of revenue from people who are unaware of this.

That's really interesting Glenys, when our dog died last year aged 3 we had gone over our insurance limit, my husband did contact Pet Plan a few weeks later and they said as we had gone over the limit we were not entitled to any money for the cost of the dog :( As you say, people are usually so upset at this time they never think or have the heart to persue it!
Another thumbs down for insurance companies!

The sum insured shouldnt really affect if you went over your limit as I expect they asked you to pay that,it would be a good idea to check.

Hi
I wondered about this to. Last year I lost my GSD to cancer and the insurance paid for his treatment out no problem. Im pretty sure the policy said it covered the cost of the dog if it died through illness. I just assumed they would send me the cheque. It wasnt until some time later when they sent me the letter saying the bill had been settled and they were closing the account that I thought about it. I then assumed that I would have to prove the amount I paid for him which I couldnt as i never got a recept and he wasnt registered. To be honest at the time I really didnt care. I had lost my sole mate and I was devistated. But I have to admit the money would of come in handy towards paying for the pup I got after he died. (I dont want to say replace him) and I dont see why I shouldnt of got what I was entitled to. I know it was my fault for not following it up but i really wasnt in the frame of mind to and really didnt want to get into any arguments about my beloved boy I was grieveing enough and just wanted it all settled. I bet this is what they are thinking.

I've just spoken to Pet Plan and they told me that we were covered for the following:
Vet fees for injury or illnes
3rd party liability
Kennels (if we were hospitlaised)
advertising (had he got lost)
But not covered for death, like you lumphy, I was pretty sure I read somewhere on all the paperwork that we were covered for the cost of the dog - like you we were too upset at the time to follow it up.
In fact phoning and just talking about it has made me feel pretty sad about him :(
Made me realise I'm going to check all the smallprint for Jasper's insurance, he/we are with M&S at the moment!

I think its because we often dont read the small print when we get things and the same with insurance I probably wouldnt have known but when I lost my Young lab some years ago the final cheque from the insurance was a shock as it was the sum assured as well and when I aksed I was told that it was the purchase price.
This time when it wasnt included I did assume that wasnt covered so I am glad I asked.
As you rightly say we are so distraught when losing a pet we sometimes cant think straight, maybe thats what they bank on, I would have gladly given anything not to have lost My Ned and still would to have him back.

All insurance policies are different and it is better never to assume anything. The insurance companies do a very good job outlining exactly what their policy does and does not cover at the time of taking it out and there is a cooling off period.
Unfortunately most people do not take time out to read them properly.
