Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / puppy in my care has hurt its leg
- By little jayne [gb] Date 17.05.07 09:10 UTC
what a position i find myself in. i sold a puppy but said i would honour their holiday. it has today gone and hurt its leg playing rough and tumble with the others.  gone lame. taken it to the vets they said if no better this evening i have to take it to be xrayed so they can determine what if any damage done.  what is my position with the new owners. dont know if i should offer them the money back. however the puppy would have been picked up last weekend. do i offer them another puppy.  i want to be responsible and i would like to keep the puppy with me as long as it takes to get better. they are on holiday now so cant contact them.  they will be back end of month. any suggestions thanks

Puppies will play rough, and they will get hurt. As the owners are on holiday I would wait and see. It could just be a simple bruised leg. If it doesn't improve then obviously take it to the vet for another check up. If it turns out to be a bit more serious then I would explain to the owners when they return and see what they say. If you are happy enough to let them have another puppy that could be an option. But if you only have the puppy you intended to keep for yourself I would offer them their money back if they don't want the injured puppy. Saying that, if the puppy is going to be visiting the vet a lot with its injury I wouldn't let it go until it was 100% fit. JMHO.

As said wait and see what happens.  Sounds like it could just be abit of brusing and pup will be fine in a day or two :)

I would tell the puppy owners when they come back what has heppend, by which time puppy should be healthy and happy again if it's not too serious.  If they want the puppy but ends up costing a fortune in vet bills due to this accident (which I think might be highly unlikely) then offer to pay the vet bills.

you have a couple of weeks though untill the puppy goes to his home so it might be all ok by then.

I had this happen 7 years ago, in exactly the same situation )holding pup to 16 weeks, though didn't realise at the start it would be that long).

Mine actually broke her leg and I then had to show the new owners that she was sound including a Vets opinion of course until they deigned to pay for her.  I had told them payment was expected when she was 8 weeks old, but never made a big deal about them not paying then and two weeks later she broke her leg.

What it taught me was to e sure to have the pup fully paid for and insured in the new owners name, as in my case I ended up spending the price of the pup on her treatment.

I would get a Vets statement saying what the diagnosis and the prognosis is, and also that the pup is cured if you keep her until then.

We bought a kitten that broke his femur a few weeks before he was due to be collected. We were asked if we still wanted him and said yes. His breeder paid for all the vet treatment and as he had to have a plate and screws in she also paid for him to be x-rayed when a year old to check all was fine. He's never had a problem. I imagine it cost the breeder a fortune though.......

Silly question really  ............. but I assume you are keeping the pup seperate from the rest of the gang
- By LindaMorgan [gb] Date 17.05.07 15:07 UTC
why would you kep it seperate
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 17.05.07 15:11 UTC
Because it's hurt itself so you don't want it doing any more damage through play.

update on the pup. she had xrays nothing broken thank goodness. she is now on metacam daily. have to take her back on friday. i will not be letting her go unless she is 100% 2 more weeks to go.  what a worry. i have insured her in the new owners name as soon as they paid for her but i dont know if the ins company will honour it as she was still with me at the time. she is a lovely girl. problem is find myself getting really attached to her as she is requiring a lot of attention from me.

Well as you were looking after her and she is already owned by them then I woudl hope the Insurance would pay out.  Bit different with boarding kennels where they charge for boarding.

When did you insure the pup from? As some policies require that they are active for a minimum period before any claims will be valid, some are 14 days, others are 28 days, so anything happening in this time scale will not be covered.

she was insured the day before. if the insurance co dont pay so be it. i have paid the bill. it is one of the risks you take when you have puppies around. my main issue is what i say to the owners of the pup. i am prepared to offer full refund. but should i ask for any contribution to the vet bill. if they decide to take the pup again do i ask them for a contribution to the bill or just write it off as one of my expenses. i dont want to be unreasonable at all

I wouldn't expect them to pay the bill.  Tell them the truth of whats happened, what the vet said etc.  If they don't want the pup then so be it but I can't see why they wouldn't.

Was it the Kennel Club free 6 weeks insurance  as I think that covers from the start
- By Emz77 [gb] Date 22.05.07 07:34 UTC
you are right choccymolly it does cover from the start as I had to use it when my old vet messed up my bitches first vaccination!!

Hi

I thought the insurance was activated once the ownership had been transfered. Have the new owners sent away the forms to do this?  I lostout last year because of this. My pup was ill when i got her but because her breeder wouldnt send her papers I wasnt able to claim on the insurance even though she dated when the pup was purchased.

I always give out the Pet Plan Insurance and that starts from the day of sale.
- By ice_queen Date 22.05.07 14:23 UTC
Is there not a difference between the puppy 6 weeks free insurance and the normal insurance you pay for though?

The puppy insurance starts at day of signing and transfer of ownership...I think, if that makes sense
- By little jayne [gb] Date 22.05.07 21:07 UTC
the insurance i used is pet plan so that does start from the day i activate it. the puppy is running around as if nothing has happened. im so pleased for her. thanks to everyone for their help will let you know the final outcome.

In that case I wold just get a statement from your vet saying she had hurt her leg, it was looked at and his opinion is that ail is as it should be, and give that to the new owners with the pup, to set their minds at rest.

up date on puppy. she has been discharged from the vets now with a clean bill of health. so im really pleased for her.
