Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / What keeps your dog occupied?

Just looking for ideas to keep our 3 month old BC/lab cross occupied when he's not out on a walk/ being played with/sleeping!  I can't give him my whole attention all the time but the only things that keep him busy for more than 5 minutes are a stuffed kong and his treat-dispensing ball.  Although we try to rotate his chews/squeakies etc, he gets bored of them after a couple of minutes and starts rampaging round the house jumping on the sofas and chewing cushions.  I know he's only young and has a short attention span, so I'm looking for more ideas so I can get on with the chores of life like cooking!  (I just did one of the intelligence tests posted a while back, hiding a treat under a towel - 10 seconds so he's pretty clever too   )

thanks, Kathryn

With our Lab, we hide treats around the house for her to find, under cushions, under rugs etc, and she loves it. Even when she's found them all, she still roots round trying to find more!

A big raw meaty knuckle bone should keep him occupied and in heaven :D for at least an hour.

Ice cubes keep mine busy or even fozen gravy ice lollies
Investgate other treat balls some are easier than others. Also try large size treats in them so they are harder to get out

Right well I've just put some ice cubes in the freezer and he learnt to search out treats in 2 seconds flat, he's such a gannet he'll do anything for food!  I know he'd love the knuckle bone, is it ok to give him one at 3 months as long as he's supervised?

They keep eachother occupied since I have 4 boston's running around the house lol

Dozer likes his kongs- I always buy black ones and with in a month there is nothing left and Iam always picking pieces off the floor- I have stuffed them but he prefers them just the way they are- guess he enjoys ripping them into little wee pieces lol :D I bought a knew one and was going to throw the old one away but was picking peices up on the floor and he was standing there pacing, once he realized it was still there he grabbed it and took off- nope he likes to make sure they are finished off first I guess he wasn't done with it yet...

I also get toy ropes they love to rip them apart (again giving me more things to pick up off the floor) or they play tugawore with it...

I also have chew bones like the galayo (sp) big bone, nylo bone but they are not as much fun as the other two toys... weird dogs...

My living room is dog toys- I have to make sure they are durable because my dogs love to chew- Tiva is more for the rope and the bones at times, Junior the bone, T-bone well she doesn't do to much, let her lay outside in the sun all day and she is happy...

The dental bones they don't last long here like the gernade I think because they are a softer chew so I end up with many pieces all over the floor...

Have you seen those tire chew toys? How are they for real chews or would I just be wasting my money?

Do you mean the black tyre type? My Dobe (who just has the normal red kongs) can easily destroy those so I don't think they'd stand a chance with your Dozer :D I think the people who make that range with the big bones do a tyre though, green I think - we haven't tried one of those yet. That range is a bit on the pricey side for us  :D

Yup those black tyre ones.... Your probably right he'd just jew that alot faster :(

Dog toys are pretty expensive especially when you have chewers

Yay I'll be off to the butcher's tomorrow!  Especially as the cat is DEFINITELY off limits   it would be great if they would play together!  Poor Moth (the cat), he's wondering what's happened to his peaceful world

After spending an arm and a leg of expensive chewies, we discovered nothing kept her busier than an empty coke bottle.

Also, when she was teething (a little older than your boy) we used to get clean soft white dish cloths,  soak them in water and then pop them in the freezer - she used to love them and they soother her gums.

Hi
my bc is 19 months
he was brought up on coke bottles & plastic milk cartons (empty) although i do have to chuck them when he starts ripping through them-which i dont mind at all cause they dont cost me anything.
also my bc loves cardboard boxes and shoe boxes.
He loves the meat filled bones (calcium bones?) they last 3-4 days with him, although he also loves the rawhide chews, they last only 1 day & they tend to sometimes get stuck and he gags/chokes on them so i'm not giving him them anymore.
