:confused:Hi

I have jsut moved to the boarders area of scotland and have spent five days trying to find a dentist but they have all said that there is at least a 2 year waiting list!  Does anyone know if all dentists are the same or if I went private would i get scene?  I have never been private before but after not being able to get a dentist down south for the past 7 years I really need to go!  Can anyone offer advice?

Also looking at teeth whitening,  A couple of customers who have really white teeth have said in conversation they all buy there solution of ebay?  has anyone tried these before and if you could recommend anything.  I am a but sceptical trying ebay for this type of stuff

Any help greatfully appreciated

Can't help with the dentists I am afraid - it seems much the same everywhere.  As for tooth whitening - I think you need to be very careful - I have very sensitive teeth and would rather them look discoloured then have them ache. Anything you do to your teeth will affect the enamel - the thinner the enamel the more sensitive your teeth will be.  I don't know if bleaching really does thin the enamel but I would find out first -

ceejay, ME TOO.  Can I ask you about your teeth?  My Dentist thinks I'm a "one of".  I get terrible pain in my teeth after being outside.  It gives me a headache even migraine medicine won't touch and makes me nauseus.  I won't whiten either due to the chance of making the extreme sensitivity worse.

Ask around.  My private dentist is cheaper than my NHS one, especially if you don't want amalgam fillings! :)

I'm private for the dentist now too and with a dental plan it doesn't work out too expensive at all. I'm getting my teeth whitened for my weeding in September but I'm going to get the dentist to do it - they do a home kit but to have it done at the dentist was only a little bit more and its all done in one go thenrather than a few weeks (and I would have been bound to forget). I think its going to cost about 350 which when you think how much a filling is these days isn't too bad, and apparently it can last up to 10 years as I don't smoke or drink red wine (I'm a bit of a coffee addict tho!).

I am with a private dentist but pay monthy into Denplan http://www.denplan.co.uk/.  You can search for a dentist in your area on the site.

It covers most things other then cosmetic and lab work.  I certainly am better off paying into this then paying privately.

My NHS Dentist went private last year and it was a case of going with Denplan or finding another NHS dentist. With all the work I have done over a year it won't cost any more :)

Just depends on the individual :) Our dentist also went private last year with Denplan the only option. We worked out the finances and have switched to a very nice, young dentist (;) ) - still NHS. Based on the work that we usually have done (or don't) we will be much better off :) Having work done privately on top is still an option :)

Personally, I don't like whitened teeth - they look very false to me. I have been told that the healthiest teeth are not very white anyway :) :) :)

8 years ago my NHS dentist would always charge me £15 for a temporary filling and then £55 for the permanent amalgam.  She charged £75 for an acrylic filling if it wasn't on the incisors - the only ones that the NHS would support.  I would go every 6 months and supposedly always needed loads of work done.
My private dentist is still only charging me £55 for all acrylic fillings now.  He is always on time - is never in a rush because he allows longer for appointments - has never caused me any pain.  He also runs his own 'insurance' for those who need a lot of work and ploughs any profits back into the practice rather than support an insurance company's profits.  Having moved away, I now travel 140 miles each way to him now that I don't need much work done.
As in every field, recommendation is always the way to go. :)

My dentist lives 800 miles away ... in Strasbourg, France!

I moved away from there over 7 years ago, but still haven't found a dentist that I can afford and am happy with  :D!

Unfortunately, I have!  I am so scared of dentists even for a filling I choose to be sedated, me a big wimp, been orthodontist with daugther this afternoon and I sit there so scared and it's not me he's seeing, she takes it all in her stride and I could get an oscar for acting so brave, she has no idea how scared I am as I would hate it to rub off on her.

I hate the dentist too.  I must admit I rarely go but last time I went was when I went to Thailand.  My boyfriend goes to the dentist everytime he goes to thailand (twice a year) for check up and teeth cleaning so his Mum asked if she should book me in and knowing I haven't been for a while my boyfriend told her yes.  So on my holiday I went to the dentist! I hated it and didn't speak to my boyfriend for the rest of that day and refused to let him go to the computer superstore!

Didn't cost much at all though! :D  Still don't want to go to the dentist again....

Will be even worse when I leave uni and I'll have to pay over here!

I do go every six months but don't find it easy, I go with the fact embedded in my head he's only going to look.  Which he does, must admit have fairly good teeth so never needed much treatment but if and when I do, I can be sedated and don't mind that so long as I wake up and it's all over.  I go every six months as I feel if I need treatment a little bit is better than letting it get worse and worse and needing lots in one go.  I am a big wimp, scared of birds too!
