Topic Dog Boards / General / Problem with Rottweiller in car.....
- By MW184 [gb] Date 16.05.07 12:39 UTC
Hi

My friend has a ford galaxy and is having problems finding a crate that will be big enough for a rottweiller but will fit in the galaxy?  Do any of you know where she could find one suitable...

She is also having problems with him in the car in general - he is sick every time even though he is a year old and has travelled in the car since 9 weeks - she only has to pick up the keys and he starts shaking.....

Any ideas gratefully received

thanks

Maxine

I have a crate 42" that fits perfectly in the back of my Galaxy. The crate is X Large and I could fit 2 Goldens in if I wished.

Or you could use the shaped cages.

Dog guard and tailgate? http://www.barjo.co.uk/ That way no space is wasted at all.

What does she consider to be a crate large enough for him? Obviously within the realms of comfort and balanced against how far she is taking him, I have always found that a dog who is not happy with car travel is far more comfortable with LESS space, rather than more.

Perhaps she could borrow one that she considers on the small side and try it?

Thank you for your suggestions - I'm going to phone her now and .  She has a crate that she uses indoors that he can stand - lay - turn around and a bit more but the car door doesnt shut with that one.  I'll get her to have a look at this site.

Thanks again

She probably has one larger than he needs a 42 inch one would be ample as that is the size all my Friends with dobes use, and they are taller.  A 42 inch crate is usually 30 inches tall and 28 inches wide

If he already hates the car I'd make sure the crate didn't rattle. I have a sound sensitive dog that hates the car and he would just melt down if I put him in a regular crate. The racket does my head in nevermind being a dog trapped by the thing. There are special car crates that don't rattle.

Thanks for this - I've sent her the link and just spoken to her.  She has just found out today that one of her two staffs will need to be pts due to cancer so didnt chat too much about the car sickness.  I will pass all your ideas on though.

The silent traveller, have had two by Dave, bespoke, cheaper than Barjo, shorter lead time, same or even better quality, he will put lead hooks on and has the pattern of all cars if he has not will go down and get them from garage; ex aircraft engineer.  Excellent service, price and quality.  Would not go anywhere else.

Totally rattle free

My friend who's a vet said that we can give my toy poodle the non-herbal Nytol to prevent car sickness.  We give Roxy half of one, but obviously the dosage would be different for a Rotti.  Perhaps she could speak to her own vet about what dose to give.

So far, it seems to work for Roxy, but I only give it to her on longer journeys.  She doesn't mind going in the car, it's just that it makes her sick.

Thanks everyone - I'll pass the new tips on to her tomorrow when I see her.
