Hi i was wondering if anyone has any ideas on this strange matter.
My Weim pup is nearly 11 months old and for a good few months now has had strange stools.
First thing in the morning his stools are lovely and hard but as we go through the day they get looser and looser. I had him under the vet for a while because he was very thin and they thought that maybe he was not too good with proteins in the puppy food.So i now have him on 2 meals a day of minced tripe and plain mixer biscuit.He has since gained a little weight and after a bout of E coli which was treated with Pro Kolin  and an injection,everything then became normal.His stools settled into normal hard stools. However lately things have reverted back, hard in the morning and loose again towards the later part of the day.Sometimes we get a half and half stool.The vet seems satisfied that he is not unwell. And i have just started him on anther course of Pro kolin to see if putting some of the good bacteria back into his stomach would help.
Just wondered if anyone else has had this strange phonomenon.

My male dogs are exactly the same. First thing on a walk the poos are solid; by the end of the walk they're drips (the poos, not the dogs!). The bitches, on the same diet, don't do that.

I think most dogs would only go after a feed so twice a day, it sounds like your boy might actually be pooing more than normal? If that is the case, I had a dog like this once, and my vet explained it with if he goes several times a day (and not being a pup fed several meals) then it is quite natural that each will get looser.

My boy has looser poohs every time he oes for a walk. Solid every other time!!! How embaressing trying to smear the majority of it off the pavement.

My dog is a bit like this. We did have major problems with colitis in the past, but since switching to raw he is pretty much consistent apart from if we are going on a particular walk where he knows that we take a toy - then I can guarantee that he will have had the squits twice before we even get there!! Not just a bit loose, but full-on cowpats. It is definitely purely wild excitement with him :D Doesn't even poo on the way to a walk any other time until we get to the destination and he's offlead.

why would that be the case, he only has 2 meals one smaller in the morning, surely only 2 poos!!! why would they get looser throughout the day.

During the night the gut is less active, the waste stays in longer so more water is taken by the body, leaving dryer stools. During the day the food moves faster through the digestive system (because the dog is conscious and active) and so there's less time for the colon to absorb the water from it. Hence looser stools.

Yep thats sounds right to me. I have a very hyper weim, think he has doggy ADHD. :-)

Just wanted to add that, although that is a good addition to a diet, I don't think that it should be solely all that his meals consist of..? I feed tripe only twice a week as part of my dog's raw diet...he also has a wide range of other raw meats/bones/offal/fish etc. What do you do about calcium..? (forgive me if tripe/biscuit isn't all you feed, I wasn't 100% clear from the post as to whether he is still getting some puppy food too) :D

Hi ,both my dogs eat raw minced tripe and mixer biscuit. The pup has been under the vet nurse for a few months and they were quite satisfied with what he was eating.My other dog has been on this diet for years with no ill effects. Although the older dog has a handful of bakers complete every morning. The pup has no puppy food now as the vet said maybe the high amount of protein in it might be causing his loose stools. I dont want to play around with his food, although i did gove him some bakers instead of the tripe this morning. We will see how things go.

I'd just second Jeangenie's explanation since my dog is absolutely consistent about the number and consistency of his daily poos. First one of the day is always firm. The second and third (his afternoon offerings) are loose and looser! This pattern remains unchanged regardless of what he has eaten (disregarding downright daft things he might have "liberated") and neither does the time at which he is fed since he's recently lost complete interest in a morning meal and prefers a smaller bowl of food at teatime, topped up with supper at about 8pm.

I was told some years ago that it usually happens if the dog has had more food than he needs/can cope with - I have no idea if this is true :D :D

well thanks everyone, sounds to me like it is quite normal, meaning that he isnt unwell. Thats what i really wanted to know.
I know thta young puppies can get loose stools if they are eating too much, dont know if this is for older dogs as well.

My understanding of meat and biscuit feeding was that the biscuit was designed to supply the missing nutrients.  Though every biscuit I ahve ever looked at seems to ahve lower levels of vitamins etc than a complete???

May not be relevant in this case but my spaniels will often when they are out do lots of little poohs, with their excitement during the walks/training the poohs then go very runny. I have seen this on many occassions with spaniels, all apart from my youngest golden who works are solid the whole way through but as he is quite excited when out his go the same way as my spaniels.

Also some high protien diets will make dogs like this and as Goldmali says so will overfeeding.
