hi, the owner of one of my pups from 18thms ago has just phoned as worried about her scottie and not entirelyy happy with vets consultations so far.
her little chap is being sick every night - birght yellow/bile stuff. has been doing this for month now and the last couple of mornings it has got a worse, lots of grass eating which is present in the vomit. The dog himself is no different in any other way, just as bright, wants to play, eating normally and passing stools which are normal. He has no temperature and not sick during the day time.
The vet did initial check and put on antibiotics but made no difference also advised to changed his diet from proplan (been on this since a pup) to royal canin sensitive diet, but after 6 days no difference. His owner noticed a small piece of kong in his vomit and reported it to the vet but the vet felt there wouldn't be anymore(?why).
she was advised to wait 3 weeks on new diet and if no better then an x ray and exploritory op . She is not keen for her dog to be operated on without more indication of what might be wrong.
Any ideas anyone.
thanks Lorri

Just to get the simple question out of the way Lorripop - how often is she feeding him? If he's on only one meal a day, I would suggest she swaps to two and may find it is just that his stomach was empty and the issue goes away.
If he's already on two meals, I will leave it to greater experts than me to comment.

thanks, yes he's on 2 meals and always has been.

OK then, but as we're all quoting the same experience here, and as he is keen to eat, perhaps worth looking at the times or trying a couple of biscuits before bed? It would be irritating if it were as simple as that and no huge vet bill or food changes were necessary.
I certainly have one girl who will bring up bile without fail if her stomach is empty. None of my others have ever done it, so it's obviously something in her make-up that has a sensitivity to it, but in her case it is very easily managed. Fingers crossed it's the same for this boy and not something more serious.

We had the same thing with my dog when he was young - bringing up bile every morning. One vet I saw was at a loss as to what to suggest (he didn't seem ill and didn't have a temperature). The second vet suggested that he was just hungry................and thats what it turned out to be. Bringing up bile was a sign that his tummy was empty and the grass eating was probably due to feeling a bit 'off' or sick. He was going too long from tea to breakfast, about 15 hours. He now has a small portion of his normal food just before bed every night and it has never happened since.
Doesn't have to be much, just a little food to give the tummy something to work on.

As Lily Mc says, usually bile is vomited when the stomach is empty (often first thing in the morning before breakfast) and giving a biscuit last thing at night often cures the problem.

I agree with the others regarding an empty stomach. My lot are usually fed at 8.30ish in the morning and 6.00ish in the evening. If for some reason I'm running late and they aren't fed at the usual times I can almost guarantee one of them at least will bring up bile. Like JG suggests a biscuit at night often cures the problem.

I agree too, Pepe always had a problem until we started him on a couple of biscuits for 'supper' I would also worm hin again, just to make sure...HTH all the best, Dawn

A friend's dog had been vomiting every few days been to vet with no diagnosis. She had found a couple of pieces that her husband's dog had chewed off a kong but thought no more about it
Her dog died of a blockage when he was opened up they found several bits of kong. Don't want to worry you unduely but it is so similar I feel i have to mention it.
Thanks for your replies and i have passed on your suggestions. She is going to try him with some biscuits when he goes to bed and see if this works.

thank you all very much - Archie's owner has emailed me to say for past 2 mornings he hasn't been sick after being given some food before bed!
Very grateful and didn't realise it could have been something so simple.
paws crossed it wont re occur.

Excellent news! :)

WTG!!!! Let's hope everything is ok now!

Excellent news!
What a shame that so many people can make such a simple suggestion here but the vet couldn't ...

So pleased to hear the good news. It is a simple solution isn't it - and to think when my Archie (coincidence !) kept bringing up bile it took a few visits and numerous injections and tablets before the other vet asked about his eating routine !.
