Hi
I'm posting this question for a friend of mine who has had to budget quite tightly recently (two cars gone badly wrong!!!!).
She cannot afford Burns anymore and has asked what she should use. She has a GSx aged 8 who has sensitive skin and a pedigree large breed pup who is 8 months. She has been looking at Skinners (especially potatoe and salmon for GSX), Autarky and Pero.
Has anyone any suggestions on what to feed or opinions on the above?

If you ask a hundred people, you'll get a hundred different answers to this question :D
So I'll give you a starter for ten.
I'm using Burgess Supadog, the sensitive one, and I am very satisfied with it. I'm feeding 7 dogs on it, and they all have small firm poo's and no upsets.
There are two versions of Burgess Supadog, a normal one and a ''Kindness and Wellbeing'' one. I use the normal one. I'm paying £17.99 a 15kg bag.

I have seen a new food (think its new anyway) called wainwrights, this i'm sure was cheaper than that of AG,JWB and the likes. Not sure totally on the ingredients but I think it was similar standard to the AG & JWB etc. Saw it in PAH

Hi Mud Mops
I have also been feeding Burgess Supadog Lamb & Rice for Sensitive dogs. I think it's a good food & it certainly suits my GSD with 'funny' stomach. I feed it in the evening, in the morning I feed raw chicken wings & lamb ribs.
Hi there.
I'm not sure how much Burns is, so not sure if this one is cheaper, but my Ridgeback has been fed Nutro Choice Large Breed Puppy, then Adult food. It's about £32 for a 15kg bag. He's done very well on it, and it also sorted out a 'poo problem' he had when he arrived from the breeder being fed on Purina Beta.
Best wishes,
Helen

I know a few people who feed autarky and their dogs do very well on it. None of them have any particular allergies that I know of though. Price is 11-15 pound range depending on where you buy. It has pretty good ingredients for any priced food.

Hi, I always used Nutro, then I discovered Autarky, which seems to be a very reasonaly priced decent food!
I use Chudleys choice which comes in at around £14 for a 15KG sack but not sure if any good for sensitive dogs but think they do a senitive range.
Hi, like newfiedreams I use Autarky for one of my newfs and she looks really good on it we buy it from Costco and we pay £9 for a 15 kg bag.

I pay £11 for a bag of Autarky from my local animal feed supplier. I wouldn't feed anything else. My springer has dodgy digestion and it suits him just fine.

I too feed Nutro Natural Choice lamb n' rice and my crew are doing great on it- have been feeding it for about 2years now with no problems- a 40 pound bag lasts my 4 boston's a month and I free feed so food is always available to them and nope they are not over weight- perfect weight- you can see them by clicking on my name...
For food as long as it
doesn't contain by-products, ethoxyquin, BHT, BHA-
As long as the first main ingredients is either a meat meal or a meat- me personally I prefer it to have a meat meal as the first ingredients...
just my two cents :)
In all you will always have one person saying one thing and someone saying another- feed what the dog does best on and what can be afforded to feed because what does good for one dog may not do as good for another :) best of luck
Thanks for all your replies as I know this is a sticky question that many have very firm ideas on.
My friend has decided to try Autarky which is in her budget and has some positive comments.
She did ask if anyone out there has ever tried Skinners, anyone?
I will keep you posted on her results.

Not personally. but I have friends using Skinners Field and Trial Maintainence. They are very happy with it and of course it's in the same price bracket as Autarky.

Years and years ago I used skinners for the gundogs, and I mean about 25 years ago!!! I have no idea what it's like now! You can join Costco privately...I joined as a Business, cos I got an Affix to show them! It's cheaper than joining privately! I think it was about £23 to join for the year and the Autarky was much cheaper than the pet shop, so I felt it was worth doing. Otherwise maybe they know someone who belongs, that wouldn't mind getting the Autarky for them? All the best and hope things improve with their situation! Dawn X
