Hi everyone
my bitch is due to have pups in two weeks but has two inverted teats, top ones near front legs, can anyone tell me if this is a problem and what to do about it. My vet said just try popping them out daily but this doesn't seem to be making any difference, they just go straight back in. Any suggestions would be welcome.
Thanks

Once her milk is in and pups feeding they will sort themselves out, assuming the litter is more than a couple, otherwise the pups may just choose to ignore them.
In my litters I have found the pups like the front teats, though I have been told by some people that they don't get used in their bitches??
Could be that my girls are forever dragging pup to th front to be washed so they take the opportunity to reach the teats nearest her head

When my summer had her litter around 7 months ago.. she had one inverted teat, very top one on chest... it never filled with milk... and stayed inverted the whole time... Although she only had three pups.. so it wasnt a problem...

My bitch had the top two teats inverted, she had loads of milk and these teats were ignored, they both became engorged and she got mastitis in the one (after the pups were weaned ) because they were inverted there was no way of letting the milk down. The vet and other breeders told me it wasn't a common occurance tho, it was because she had so much milk and only 4 pups.

This is why I mentioned litter size. If i had this again I would put the strongest pups on these as often as possible to draw them out. This goes for any teats not being used evenly, as many bitches favour a side and while cleaning will lay so that some of the teats are inaccessible.
I make a habit of checking a bitches undercarriage after she had been out to relieve herself, noting any fuller glands and ensuring the pups fed from these at the next opportunity.
Despite this I did have my first case of Mastitis over Christmas, it was that bitches third litter, and somehow infection got in.

I did do this, I also tried to milk them down, but nothing doing, the pups weren't able to get milk out of them and neither was I :( If she hadn't had so much milk she might have been ok, but she could easily have fed 2 litters with the amount of milk she was producing, as it was the pups were like seals and grew really quickly - they were very large at birth for Bedlington pups!
The vets' opinion was that the milk didn't dry up properly in the gland and eventually infection set in. Pups were 6 weeks old by then.
It's such a shame she had to be speyed, she was such a good mum, even now if she hears a pup or baby crying she comes running, all gung-ho!

Bless. I was fortunate that Jozi's Mastitis occurred during her last litter and that she was going to be spayed asap.

Most of my dogs top ones are inverted and I've never had any problems with them.
Thanks for all the replies. I guess i will just have to keep an eye on them and try to get a pup latched on. Even though they are inverted mammary glands around them seem quite enlarged as though they will fill with milk.
