Last weekend we had visitors and whilst one of them was tickling a dogs tummy I spotted a flea!  Now my eyesight isn't brilliant at the moment so that was a miracle I saw it.  We haven't had a problem with fleas for some years and last year I stopped routinely fleaing them with Frontline and didn't have ANY sign of trouble at all.  I did regularly give the beds a spray though.  Anyhow, out came the frontline and I thought all was forgotten until I noticed our Springer was chewing his back end.  Just a little up from the base of his tail is a 1" x 2" strip of scabby bits that he's obviously ripped raw.  All I could think of to do over the weekend is bathe with diluted Hibiscrub.  The most obvious cause of this is a flea allergy (the Frontline went up the other end behind his neck!).  It's being made worse by him chewing at it.  it looks a bit weepy with clear liquid (yuk) but not infected at all.

Now tomorrow I'm off into hospital for a few days to get a flippin tumour removed from under my eyelid.  That'll teach me to sunbathe when we had all that sun back in '76!!!  I knew there was a reason why I supposed to be inside revising for my O'levels!  But that means I'm pushed for getting him to a v.e.t. (sorry he's sat on my feet so thought it best to disguise the word).  Is there anything else I can do other than leave directions for regular bathing?

All bedding has been washed or destroyed, kennel sprayed, carpets sprayed, and they've been frontlined.  Any more suggestions?  I may not be around to post for a couple of days so if you can think of anything, thanks.  If it really spreads of course we;ll get him to the (place where you have to take dogs when they're poorly), but I'm sure some of you will have experience of this. :-)

To be honest I think you've done all you can...the fact that everything will be dead or dying now, will mean he certainly won't be bothered for a while!!! I would just suggest bathing with hibiscrub as you have been doing, and get on with the operation and try not to worry too much!!! Take care, you'll be in my thoughts and prayers, as will your wee man!! All the best, Dawn X

Hope that the op goes well, Jacky :) :) Have you tried giving them garlic ?? I've never had fleas with my two despite irregular use of Frontline, but they have had garlic every day (I give the dried stuff for horses :D )

Hope to see you back on CD as quick as your eyes permit :) :)

Firstly, good luck with the op.  The wet stuff sounds remarkably like wet eczema. One of my girls has a problem that if she ever gets bitten by a flea she normally has an adverse reaction and ends up with wet eczema. Certainly Hibiscrub will help but if it doesn't then a trip to the Vets is advisable as wet eczema is notorious for spreading and can a right mess. Hopefully you have caught it in time and it should clear up.
