I am interested in adopting a labrador puppy and have located a litter born this past Monday. It is the first litter of puppies for the family that owns the mother. Should I have any reservations about adopting from people without significant experience as breeders? The puppies will get lots of exposure to children and the owners seem to be conscientious.

Thanks in advance for any feedback anyone might have.

The following is just my Opinion.

All of us have to breed our first litter. Bearing that in mind breeding is a serious matter that requires a lot of knowledge of the faults and virtues of the parents and earlier generations. Obviously the first time breeders knowledge will be limited re first hand knowledge.

A first time breeder should have had all the applicable health tests carried out for their breed (hips, elbows and eyes in Labs I beleive, though the elbow scheme is quite new).

They should also have been mentored by more experienced breeders, this would most likely be their bitches breeder, or even the stud owner.

So ma little questioning along this tack should yield you the answers that you may be looking for.
