My dog gave birth yesterday evening-she had four pups-one died. The first pup was a whopper and took 15 mins to be born-that is when I knew she had been torn.  The three pups doing well.  However my poor bitch's vulva has been badly torn-looks like a piece of raw meat.  I took her to the emergency vet last evening and she said she has never seen anything like it before-mentioned also that she hopes her uretha has not been damaged-that gave me confidence.  She gave her antibiotic  and a morphine jab.
She mentioned that my bitch may have to see a soft tissue specialist-yes it is that bad-I am soo upset I do not know what to do.

The bitch seems fine in herself and has eaten a bowl of food and drank plenty of water. However she has not had a wee since teatimbefore the birth last evening.  Put her out this morning and she just wants to get back to babies.

Any advice please.

She informed me to see my own vet on Monday.

Oh, your poor bitch :( :(
If she were my mine, I think I'd be trying to see a Vet again today, it doesn't sound like you really got a very good response from the emergency vet, can you ring today and express your concerns about her not going to the loo yet, I expect she's really sore and bruised.

Other than that, I really don't know what to advise. Sorry.

Although it's absolutely normal for bitches to be reluctant to leave their new litter to go out to relive themselves, usually needing to be forced outside on a lead and kept there till she's made herself comfortable, your bitch has suffered damage which at the very least will have cause internal bruising and swelling which might well make urnation particularly difficult. If she hasn't had a wee within 24 hours of the last one then I'd contace the emergency vet - she might need catheterisation. Fingers crossed she won't though. Be firn about taking her outside on the lead every couple of hours to give her as much opportunity as you can.

Can't add to what JG has already said, but how terrible:eek: that must have been a whopper of a pup, I've never seen a pup ever take 15 mins to deliver the pup must obviously have been visible, was she straining to push the rest out for 15 mins, could you not intervene to help deliver or secrete her vulva, was it a breech, or was it basically just down to the enormous size of the pup? I'm just curious as to how it took so long and caused so much damage. :-(

I'm so sorry to hear that your bitch is so badly hurt, going by human births we would be stitched by now, antibiotics and morphine are going to be good for so long, perhaps the pain will subside in a few days and with general anesthetic I guess it would not be any good for her milk and the pups, so that is why the soft tissue specialist is not being used immediately.

Back to the toileting as already said it is not abnormal, some bitches can naturally store their toilet for a couple of days if must, they are able to shut down that part of their bodies to stay with their pups, as they are their first priority, in the safety of a home most bitches feel safe enough to leave their pups for a minute to toilet which is why popping her out should work but, I guess with the tear too she may be afraid to toilet aswell, so don't panic about this, only if she has not gone in a couple of days.

Please keep us updated on your bitch and what your vet decides to do for her and how she is coping, it is such a rarety for something like this to happen.

Just taken Jorja in the garden and she has managed to urinate-thank goodness.  One less problem for the moment.

I spoke to a lady who had breed goats/sheep/dogs/cats and she has never heard of this tearing of the vulva.

I will see my own vet in the morning and see what his advice is.

Think I will try to catch a bit of sleep on the sofa-had no sleep last night-far too stressed.

Thank you to all that have replied-you have been a great help.

I will email tomorrow with an up-date

I witnessed something like this many years ago. A lady called me to her bitch as she was having problems. On arrival I found the pup completely delivered over the pelvis and just suspended in a great ball of thin skin , the opening of the vulva was so small .As the bitch was by now understandably distressed we went to the Vet at once. On the way the very wriggly pup burst through, the  very thin skin of the well stretched vaginal wall. The vulva opening was still intact, the remaining pups came out the same way and after the opening was stitched. If its any consolation the bitch made a good recovery and was speyed. It was a very frightening experience to us ,I dread to think what the bitch had gone through. I can only suggest that as she has now passed urine  she be taken to the vet to stitch up the tear and hopefully all will be well too. Infection and pain relief will be needed ASAP. Good luck with your girl.

Sounds like that bitch may have had a stricture?  So the proper area didn't stretch and the perineum tore instead.

Yes ,thats how it happened as I recollect. It was a long time ago,but I have never forgotten the experience. Would the bitch have mated if she had a stricture, , its not something I have ever come across? I do recall the bitch had a "fleshy" vulva, for the want of a better description. Not being there at the time the bitch was pushing ,I have often wondered how this happened.
I don't recall the pup being unduly large ,but that could have been a reason or as you say some obstruction? I just remember vividly the feeling of the pup moving. She had the capacity to hold it outside her body had the pup been dead or still it may not have torn, perhaps.

depends were it was, adn also the tie if there was one might have happened after the dog had got past it, but it still impeded the birth of a pup.
