Topic Other Boards / Foo / My Sons Operation

Hi,

Have any of you gone through this with your child?  and do you have any advice or info?

My son is having an operation soon.  He walks on his toes and we were referred to a physiotherapist who said there was nothing she could do for him it woul dahve to be operated on.  The way he walked was starting to affect his hips and pelvis and that they would become deformed unless he was operated on!  Big shock!

We saw the consultant 6 weeks ago who said he needs the tendons on his legs cut :-(  He will be in casts and a wheelchair for about 6-8 weeks, then he is having special leg frames/boots which he has to wear for a year.

I'm still a bit in the dark until we go back for our pre-op session what exactly he will go through.  For instance afetr the op,  how hard will it be for him to get around etc,  will he need a wheelchair for longer?  Will it be painful for him after?

Any advice greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Ali

Can't help with any information about this operation, I'm afraid - but sorry to hear that your son will have to go through it :(

How old is he?    My grandson was 8 when he broke his hip (Christmas 2005) - it had to be pinned, and he was in a full body cast for 8 weeks, then unable to put any weight on it for another 8 - in a wheelchair, then on a zimmer frame/elbow crutches.   By June, he was up and running again - limping slightly to start with.   By the time he had the pins removed, in December 2006 he was fine - might have been slightly protective/worried about falling over to start with - but enthusiastic enough to break his arm in the first gym lesson he was able to do  - January this year.   All healed now - and he is back to playing touch rugby:eek:

They are very resiliant at this age.

Hi Margot,

Blimey   Good job they are resiliant!! Boys eh!!

Callum is 8 too.  He is very blase about the whole thing   although I don't think he actually realises the full extent of what this op means.  Although I was just talking to a friend on the phone (Hi Lynn :D) and she said he will probably love the attention initially!! :D

till he gets bored!
