Topic Dog Boards / Health / thirsty after general anesthetic?
- By zarah Date 19.04.07 12:21 UTC
My Dobe (3 y.o) had to have a general anesthetic yesterday morning for xrays. He ate a small meal yesterday evening, was a little bit reluctant to eat this morning but has done so now, is playing normally and going to the toilet normally etc. He seems to be drinking a heck of a lot though - does anyone know offhand if this is a normal side effect of a GA? He's had GAs in the past but I don't recall

He may be just a bit dehydrated.  Fluid is using given during an operation but not just for an Xray and he was maybe too groggy to make up for the period yesterday when he could not drink.

Yes, hopefully that is just it. Now that I think about it he went to have a drink 8.00 yesterday morning as we were getting ready to leave for the vets - obviously the water had been taken up, so he was already thirsty even before the GA! Don't think he then had a drink until about 4.30 in the afternoon. Hopefully he's just making up for lost time then :)

Hi Zarah, general anaesthetics do make you feel very thirsty, as said, dehydration to take into account too!

Thanks for that. Couldn't recall myself as the only GA I've ever had was when I was about 5! Just googled it though and have seen quite a few posts on message boards about being incredibly thirsty after, so probably the same for dogs too esp. if not giving fluids during, as stated.

Thanks both :)
