Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / day 23 of season
- By LindaMorgan [gb] Date 16.04.07 15:07 UTC
Just picked my male up from kennels, not realised but my bitch is still in season, absolutely devastated I only went to pick kis up ad e got to her, going to vets but want to know what would be best for her, injections or speying, I can't believe this is happening  need help urgently as it is only 6 months from her last litter
- By Brainless [gb] Date 16.04.07 15:49 UTC
Depends if she will be needed for future breeding, if not then I would have her spayed.  I would not trust a bitch of mine at day 23 around an entire male.

so glad you are around brainless, she is booked in the vets at 5.30 and will see what they say.  Thank you. Can I also ask when you would let them back together again for future reference.  I wouldn't like this to happen again with my other dogs.

The injection will delay the ending of her season a bit longer :( This is one of the main reasons I now have cages ;) I keep them separated for a while after I think the season is finished and take them outside with the dog on a lead. That way I can make sure that he isn't interested in her :D

Most bitches average out at about 21 days, but it has been known for them to go 28 or more :( Having the injection will delay it for another week or more. Depends on your bitch, I'm afraid.

Normally I would say until day 28, but as the other poster has said who knows after the jab.

When I had a dog to mate my bitch her daughter had just finished her season and was on about day 24, but the dog would have mated her in preference to her Dam who wasn't quite ready.

I waited until he showed no interest in her in the crate then took them on lead together for a couple of days, and then when I was sure he wasn't in the least interested did I let them together under supervision.

Fortunately in a few days he had better things on his mind.

just back from the vets £150 lighter she had an injection ad needs to go back tomorrow atthe same time for the second one.  dog gone back to kennels for 10 days

£150???????  blimey, isnt that the same cost as spaying?
- By Brainless [gb] Date 16.04.07 20:18 UTC
Done by weight here, mine was £170 for a bitch who is heavy (not fat) for her breed at 23kg.
- By MichelleM Date 16.04.07 20:58 UTC
 @ £170  my girl is 21.5 kg and cost me under £80 for both injections
- By Brainless [gb] Date 16.04.07 22:23 UTC
I meant cost of having my girl spayed recently. :D
- By MichelleM Date 17.04.07 07:37 UTC

- By LindaMorgan [gb] Date 16.04.07 21:53 UTC
same here brainless it goes off weigh and even though my bitch is far from fat she weighs 25k
- By newfiedreams Date 16.04.07 22:00 UTC
Good grief...is the Vet going on holiday with that money!!! It would cost me a ruddy fortune as my Newfie weighs in at 60kg!!!
- By LindaMorgan [gb] Date 16.04.07 22:13 UTC
I have asked for shares in the business she laughed

This huge cost rather begs the question of how many people will bother to have their pet bitches jabbed if it costs that much.  I am sure many irresponsible owners would think to carry on with a pregnancy make what they can from sale of pups and take the rest down the dogs home.

Or is the idea that at such a high cost they may as well have their bitch spayed????
- By LindaMorgan [gb] Date 17.04.07 14:05 UTC
I was discussing this with the vet and she was saying that she can tell the difference between responible owners and not, one woman asked how to drown the pups at birth as tis was a cheaper option.  I was also suprised that you can register a litter with the kennel club with consecutive breading season after season.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 17.04.07 18:05 UTC
Only if your within the limit allowed for litters for the bitch and if you are not a breeder that is required to be registered with the local authority (BREEDING 5 or more litters in any 12 month, or deemed commercial).
- By LindaMorgan [gb] Date 17.04.07 20:14 UTC
I am only a novice but Surely this is not good for the bitch or the offspring
- By Brainless [gb] Date 17.04.07 20:54 UTC
As normal practice no, but sometimes bitches don't cycle conveniently asnd the next but one season is just under a year.  A bitch that goes 10 months between seasons coudl legituimately be mated on the next season, or one that had just one or two pups in a breed that has bigger litters.

It is for these reasons the KC recinded the rule for hobby breeders.

Just to let you all know I took Holly back to the vet this evening and as a loyal customer (5 dogs, 3 cats, 2 ferrets, and a gecko) I got a 25% discount.  Well chuffed.

I had the mismating injection for my bitch 4 years ago and it cost me £30 in total!  Eek  and she's a 29kg Munster!    The newer injections are a lot safer than they used to be and I didn't find the season was prolonged.
- By Goldmali Date 17.04.07 17:33 UTC
Blimey I wish my vet would do that! With 9 dogs, 32 cats and various others I've only ever once had a discount.
