Hi all
I need a bit of advice...?!
Our breed club hold a champ show and 2 open shows each year, and about two years ago decided to let the membership vote for the judges for each show.  Basically you get nominated, seconded and then placed on the list for the relevant show and then they have a formal ballot.  Anyway, unbeknown to me..? LOL i was nominated to do the open show :-) And incredibly i got the most votes!!!!  So now the club want to invite me to do the open show...  Problem is i am still on the 'c' list.  The club have said that if i can get onto the 'b' list by the end of the year?! they will honour the appointment.  I have enough dogs (i tend to get big entries), but am short of 7 classes... which is 3 shows.  Any ideas how to get judging apointments when you are not supposed to canvas for them?  I'm not the type of person to join the 'click' just to get invites, i don't do false friendships etc.
I'm really honoured that the membership think i am worthy, and i guess this is because of my previous judging and my show record.. i would hate to dissapoint them...

Any ideas...anyone????

Sharon.. there are still many clubs out there struggling to find judges for the 2nd half of this years shows.. I know we are, and although we can get 'ticket' judges.. still have problems with specific breed judges if that judge is doing another show within certain limits.. .. I know its not the done thing to canvass and tends to be very frowned upon.. but do you think maybe your breed club secretary might help out...

I know the feeling.... also on the 'C' list, and have been put forward for a couple of open shows. but not a hope in hecks chance of reaching my 'dog no's' till 2009 lol... it would be such a shame to miss out.. being so close...

No ideas, but congratulations on being so well thought of in your breed! You should get a good entry if you get on the B list in time. :-)

Why can the Club that wants you to judge for them, and whose membership have voted for you not just put you on their B list, especially as you have done enough dogs. I cant understand why breed clubs make things hard for breed people.

Hi sharon,

A lot of clubs have the phrase 'except in exceptional circumstances' at the end of their judging criteria.  If your club has this then they can forgo the 7 classes you need and put you on their B list anyway.  To be honest it seems a little disorganised of your club to allow someone to go forward to a ballot without knowing what list they're on!  As for getting judging appointments, no - there's no way you can ask for them, besides, almost every society will have all their judges booked for the rest of the year, if not the following year too!

Unless you can get round your criteria as I mentioned, it might be best to wait until you're on the B list and then get nominated again for your club show.

Well the club should put you on the B list if you won the members ballot,
the club let your name go forward, so they should honor the ballot and
move you to the B list,,,,  what breed do you have,

Thanks everyone.

I do think sometimes these rules can be maddening LOL, i actually tick all of the boxes for the A3 list bar classes and dogs.
I guess it is my own fault... been in the breed for 17 years and only decided to start judging 2 years ago, after making up a number of champions.
There are people on the current b list who have been in the breed less than 6 years who have never even owned a dog in the stud book, but started
judging the second they got a dog and 'know the right people'.

The criteria does not have a 'save in exceptional circumstances' clause.

Sad thing is the club open show regularly gets 100 + entries  and 22 classes so then i'd have all the dogs / classes i need LOL!

Oh well - have to wait and see what happens... if it's meant to be...

There's no reason why the club can't put you onto the B list if they think you are capable! :)

However I'm suprised they let your name be put forward as you are not on the relevant list (no offence)

Here's hoping you get these classes beofre the end of the year :)

This is something that has frustrated me for some time so a friend suggested a website, don't know if any of you have seen it or used it  www.ijudgedogs.com    I need only 9 more dogs to go onto our B list, so near, yet so far. Don't get me wrong, I am in no rush to give CC's or anything like that (I am resigned myself to the fact that I might do that when I am about 75, just in time for the KC to say I have to retire as I am too old!!)
Anyway, back to the website, on looking through it, one thing which really annoys me is the number of people who are listed for almost every breed! They don't just want to further their judging career and progress within a breed, they want to do it all and judge them all!! and on looking through the dog papers for upcoming shows, we have SO many judges that I don't have a clue who they are or even if they own/show Gundogs....I would much rather travel that bit further to support a breed person who might actually know what they are doing and has the breeds intrests at heart!!

You have to pay £20 for the priviledge of being on their site though ;)
Yes we also have quite a number of people that aren't breed specialists
up on the I want to judge Boxers, for some they aren't even within the
same group as Boxers so totally bizarre why they want to judge the breed..

Peoples interests may be across groups.

For example my breed has little physical characteristics in common with most of my group.  I would generally prefer to go under a judge who judges another Spitz breed rather than a dyed in the wool hound person if I have to go under an unknown judge.

This is why I prefer at Open shows where the breed doesn't draw big entires and warrants a breed judge not to have classes at all, as usually the AVNSC are judge by the Group or BIS judge that is likely to be more experienced in many breeds.

That's true, most of the breeds I love best are gundogs, spaniels and setters in particular, but the breed I show and will love most forever are Cavaliers - technically spaniels, but in the toy group. :-)

Would anyone be intersted in a free website to advertise being available for judging appointments? I would be happy to build and run it? i disscuss ideas more if anyone is interested.
