Well I am spring cleaning and the dogs toys stink!!! I know how to clean the hard toys (with the hosepipe) but I am wanting to know if I can put the soft squeaky toys in the washing mashine on a 30 degree delicate wash??? Will the squeaky bits last?? I don't want to do it if they will break as the dogs will be devastated. The dogs have 3 big boxes of toys so I don't fancy washing them by hand but if I must then I will ;-D

I don't buy furry ones for the dogs infact don't buy toys at all, they just aren't interested - they prefer 'live' toys but I'd stick the furry ones in an old pillowcase, tie it up with a lassy band, bung it in the machine on the shortest coolest wash.  At best it works....at worst, you have to fork out for more.  But washing them by hand - yeuch!

With the amount of toys that my two have I really don't want to fork out for new toys It would probably come to several hundred pounds Yes I know I spoil them :rolleyes: :-D
My boys would also be extremely upset if their toys did not squeak any more!!

I wash the toys in with the bedding.  Sometimes they squeak afterwards and sometimes they don't but if they are favourite toys, the girls don't seem to mind. :)

I was just going to say the same, i wash in the washing machine but some squeak after, some dont, i suppose its just the luck of the draw.

My dogs toys consist of a few tug ropes, one very dilapidated bunny and otehr destuffed teddy and bones and empty plastic bottles.

Beyond puppyhood mine aren't interested in anything that isn't some sort of edible.

I just chuck all the soft, squeaky toys in the washing machine for a normal 40 degree wash and spread them round the radiators afterwards - they come out fine and still squeak :)  In fact I've dug them out the garden before, where the youngster tried to bury them, and washed them and they come up good as new :)

I chuck all our squeaky toys in the wash and dryer. We have dog toy loads around here :-D The squeaks and honks (ducks) all come out fine. I also have a surgical ward but I'm afraid the waiting list has extended well beyond 2 weeks at the mo. :)

Me too!!  'Awful Mad Kitty' has just had several hunderd stitches administered and should now be fit to withstand another Newfoundland attack :P

Now I have a box of toys waiting stitching. Most of the older toys now look a little demented where a leg or arm is missing of the fabric was no longer there so I just pulled it together as much as I could ;-D It's a good job that dogs can't tell if a soft toy should have 1, 2, 3 or 4 legs otherwise they might be a bit mentally disturbed :-D :-D

OH obviously thinks that I really enjoy this aspect of owning a dog as he bought me a huge sewing kit for christmas and thought that I was be really excited about it :-D ;-D

How about just putting half of them in the washing machine and then making sure they're still alive before bunging the other half in (the toys, not the two legged OH) :P

I put Barney's wee pals in the washing machine at 40 degrees and then I hang them out on the washing line   He sits under the washing line watching them flying about in the wind, looking VERY confused and occasionally barks at them :D

I put Roxy's toys in washing machine at 40 degrees then tumble dryer.  Some still squeek afterwards and a few don't.  She's never been too bothered if a toy's lost it's squeek.

Care advice on the lovely soft, furry, slightly wheezy (not squeeky!) bone that is my youngest dog's favourite is - sponge carefully with a damp cloth and dry naturally    As if!!  it gets bunged in the washing machine and put on a radiator to dry :D :D :D

O dear - dare I put Tara's 'baby' in the washing machine ??? :( :( It is a gorilla about 12 inches high. She had it for her first birthday (she is nearly 5 now). She had her first season soon after and ever since, I'm sure, she thinks it is her baby. She is so delicate with it and either licks it carefully or sucks it :D :D :D I have hand washed it, but it is revolting :D :D Otherwise it is in very good condition and as she doesn't want any other toys (apart from her ball) I (and she) would be devastated if it came apart in the washing machine

Oh, exactly :D :D :D Funnily enough, OH saw an almost identical one thrown into the skip at the local tip the other day - he nearly reached in and got it, but was a bit worried that it might be full of germs etc etc and he would get told off :D :D :D

Although I throw quite a few of their toys that have got a bit beyond it.
They quite like the air kongs at the mo.
But any of the plush toys forget it - they are lucky to last 5 mins!!
Which is a shame as they love em - but they aren't economical to buy for a 5 min play.

Washing machine with not very dirty bedding (at 60) as most dog bedding gets done at 95! I know it's not good for the envirnment but it's good for killing anythign in the beds! :D

Well I have sorted it out: four loads for the washing machine, three huge boxes of hard toys for washing with the hosepipe and one box that I think are too delicate so I'll wash by hand!!! And that is only the toys from inside, I haven't searched the garden yet :-D

None of our dog toys last long enough to get to the stage of needing a wash :)  His favourite toy is two pairs of old socks tied together to make a tuggy - that just gets thrown away and replaced with a new one made from the numerous odd socks left behind by the washing  machine fairy :D

Fantastic idea, we've got loads of single socks here, usually I put them with something that looks kinda the same and stick them in my OH's sock drawer :D He gets dressed in the dark so wouldn't notice anyway :D

Now I can put them to good use

I wouldn't consider anything that is a toy suitable for a dog to be too delicate for the washing machine.  I would wash the hard toys in there too.  Except bones.

The delicates are mainly toys with electronic noises so i didn't think would be brilliant in a machine ;-D ;-D
I think that I have nearly done !! I am now on the last load of washing for the machine. I washed all of the hard toys this morning then took dogs for a walk, tripped over one and fell on my hands and knees onto the hard floor I haven't fallen over like that since I was a child!!! my hand and knees hurt (do I get sympathy on here ;-) :-D ) but it is OK I didn't let go of the dogs

The only person in my house who has soft toys is my granddaughter - have been lucky enough to rescue one twice from my Meg before she made mincemeat of it.  It went into the washing machine both times!  The only toys my dog is left with to play are a large noisy ball - too big to put in her mouth, a couple of kongs (that go in the dishwasher now and then) and a bouncy hard rubber ball.  Anything else will be torn to shreds and eaten.

Washing macnine on 40 and then the tumble dryer in winter or clothes line in summer (dogs find both fascinating!) - come out good as new. My sewing skills were a bit late last week unfortunately - I found the insides of one unfortunate soul scattered around the garden. Mine have even got a toy basket now to cope with the amount of different cuddly creatures, some of which squeak or honk (ducks) or oink (a pig!), people who don't know me ask where my small children are (I have none yet) and how are the dogs with them! At the moment the favourite is a giant moose I got from a charity shop - its nearly as big as the greyhounds themselves but they insist on dragging it around with them and shaking it to death! I tried squeaky plastic balls - they lasted all of one hour on Christmas morning!

My Dobe would love soft toys. He had a couple as a very small pup but none since really. I did think of raiding charity shops recently as he has damaged yet another ligament after sprinting after a squirrel so I'm racking my brains for ways to keep him busy. I decided against it though as, at the moment, he ignores my nieces and nephews soft toys and I don't want to make it so that he thinks all soft toys are his to destroy. Yes, mine certainly can... anything they can reach is theirs and anything they can't reach isn't :D

My nieces learnt very quickly that if they brought a soft toy or doll with them when coming to stay they would have to be kept well out of reach or they're fair game.

The huge pleasure my lot get out of soft toys far outweighs any 'inappropriate disembowellings' that may happen :D

Mine knows the difference between his socks and our socks. If it's in his toy box he can have it. Anywhere else it's off limits (as OH's dresser tends to be the armchair downstairs for a week or so this is important). He has a lot of soft toys too and even though I don't have kids, when he does see a child with a soft toy he understands 'not for dogs' means to leave it alone. I don't know if he would leave it for long if left alone with it and it was on the floor but hey, he is a dog so I don't expect miracles.

Mine can tell the difference between their soft toys and my teddies in my bed ;-D. They will definately smell different. They ignore my soft toys in my bed even though they also have their toys in my bed when they bring me them in a morning ;-D.

Aaah, I might treat him to one (or two, or three) then :D I've showed him the soft toys in our local pet shop before - he likes the talking ones best, but seems very confused by them (will hold them in his mouth triggering the voice to go off whilst putting his head from side to side trying to figure out what's going on :P)

Mmm soft toys only last on average for about ten minutes :D :D

They prefer to play with tennis balls or the occasional soft toy they manage to pinch from Indigo :rolleyes:

The latest one being an old teething ring rattle thing that mus have been hidden in her bedroom somewhere :)

Call me mad but I steam clean my little Newfie boys toys. The high pressure nozzle on my machine washes of the dirt and grime on the fluffy toys and the high temperature around 130c kills the bacteria and they smell nice and clean when I've finished.
In fact I use the steam cleaner every day around my house. I find it perfect as his diet has a high amount of raw meat which tends to be drooled all over the carpets and seats.
Best of all there are no chemicals used just good old tap water.
