My brother has a staffie, unfortunatly my brother bought his staff from a friend so does not know the history of the pedigree.
His staffie is lovely and good build but his ears are always pricked up, and although he loves his dog very much and would not change him for the world, he wants to know whether this is normal on a staffie?
He will be looking for another staffie in a few months time, with the staffie type i.e. with flap over ears. and wants to know the best way of finding a staffie of this type.
The father of his staffie was the staffie type he was looking for, broad, flap over ears, but his mum had longer pricked ears and unfortunatly was under 2 years old.  I have now told him that the mum was too young to have had a litter.

The parents ears are not always the best bet for sussing out what the ears will end up like.  My staffy had perfect ears until she started teething and they went haywire.  ! still sticks out a bit funny but we say it adds to her character rather than being a defect. lol

I would contact your local breed club for SBT breeders, details can be found on Champdogs under the relevant sub-section.

Hope he has look finding a puppy:cool:

Our first staffordshire bull terrier has a fantastic pedigree and both parents had perfect ears but she herself doesnt hold hers correctly, like cheekycows her looked normal at first but changed as she grew, they suit her though and she's still perfect to us :)

You cannot guarantee ears or anything else when mating but you can do your home work and see if its a particular fault that seems to be passed on in a particular line

The John F Gordon book has pictures of how ears should and should not look- what you are looking for is a neat rose ear

And please don't forget to mention to your brother about L2 tested pups!!!!

oh and the correct ear carriage on a stafford is called rose......
breeding or pedigree aside cannot always guarantee that an ear will be pricked as it should be...

from the standard:Ears
Rose or half pricked, not large or heavy. Full, drop or pricked ears highly undesirable.

PHPV too.  Done at same time as eye test for hereditary cataract, or do they have a DNA test for HC now?.

They have a DNA Test for HC and L2-HGA but the PHPV is still just the eye test.
