Not for me, my boy still hasn't mated and I want him too, typically

Anyway a friends dog has mated and tied to her girl day 14, nothing wrong with the mating, in fact it's a repeat mating BUT the repeat mating was only 6 months ago.
She has rang the vets who have said to bring her in day 3 and 5 for an injection, then went on to explain the downfalls to this.  So friend is now thinking it may be best to let the mating stay and see what happens.
I'm leaning to having the injection, but wanted to hear other people's views too, the pups would be 8 months old when these would be due, if she has even concieved.
So repeat mating or injection - what would be best for the bitch ?  She is a toy breed and back in lovely condition, birth'd and raised two pups last time.

Regards

Hi cant help you on whether to have injection or not as dont know enough about it but can you register another litter with the kennel club within a year for the same bitch? just a thought.
- By lydia Date 04.04.07 09:50 UTC
Yes as she isn't a registered breeder.
Not an ideal situation I know but now it's happened she needs to do whats best for the bitch, and is trying to get as much info as possibe

Personally I'd have the bitch jabbed to stop any pregnancy.  Yes there can be side effects but I'd rather deal with those consequences than bring another litter into the world purely on the basis of 'what if's'.  The previous litter isn't old enough yet to be able to guage whether a repeat mating is a good idea or not.  I'd suggest she put it down as a valuable lesson learned and have the bitch jabbed.

Hi

I have read a lot of people dont like this injection because it can cause problems later on. I dont know I havent used it but a friend of mine did and she got two jags and the bitch still went on to have a litter. Unfortunatly it was one big pup that needed a C section.

I am inclinded to say let it be and see if she is in pup. If she is back in condition she should be ok and has she only had two pups the last time she wasnt over worked. I know some people will disagree.

Likewise lumphy. A friend of mine had the same thing, 2 jabs still went on to have 2 pups by emergency c-section, 1 giant pup which died at birth and 1 deformed pup, dead at birth. I think I'd be inclined to let her proceed with a normal pregnancy, if she has taken.

I have used the injection as next doors daughter brought her dog to their house and he scaled our fence.I was upstairs putting washing away and came back down to be greeted by them both tied.
I phoned the vets immediately who advised on the injection.I had no problems with it and my girl had her normal heat  months later.

Hi

Just a thought is your friend planning on having any more litters from this bitch. If not why not just get her spayed.

Had a bitch that had the jab and she was fine although she did bloat up for a few weeks after, like Surannon I wouldn't go ahead with this mating.

One vet was full of doom & gloom when i'd phoned about the mismating injection and another one was very matter of fact and said that side effects are less of a problem now as the amount of hormone given isn't as strong as before now it's in 2 injections.

I attended a seminar on this subject recently and the expert of canine reproduction told us that the old injection they used to give did cause problems. The injection used now is the same one they give to bitches to prevent pyometra, and it is safer.

My sons collies had an accidental mating, they are litter brother and sister, so we had the mismate injection.

Three weeks ago he came in one night at 9pm with a pup in his hands, he had let them out for there last run, heard something in the kennel, went in found the pup.  The bitch has shown no signsof being in whelp.  The pup was ice cold, dehydrated and had the most enormous cleft palate so had to be pts immediately.

Deformity of pups following the jab does seem to be a common theme.

A friend in dobes had the jab and then the bitch went into labour producing one pup with it's insides on the outside and one live healthy one.

Thanks for you replies, will pass them on

Yes, they are planning on mating the bitch again, she is quite an important bitch to them, hence her research after this accident

If she had no trouble raising the pups last time, and only had 2 pups so it wasn't a huge drain on her, I would be inclined to let the pregnancy go ahead rather than muck around with that injection, it sounds very dodgy from what I've heard. BUT if they don't get what they want from this mating, be really careful with her and make sure she has a proper rest between litters next time.

Thanks Lucy, believe me she is feeling terrible about it all, and it won't be happening again, the bitch will be going on her holidays next time she's in season, with a member of her family.
Shes still not decided yet, will be going for her appointment and having a good chat with the vet and having a full check up on her bitch and will decide from there, thankyou very much to all of you that have replied.

But for many toy breeds rearing two pups is a drain.  toy pups are proportionately huge compared to the average pups of other breeds.
- By lydia Date 05.04.07 16:35 UTC
Yes, I agree although average litter size for this breed is 4
