Topic Dog Boards / Health / Foot Injury

I wonder if anyone has any knowledge of damage to ligaments in the foot? My 4yr old dobermann bitch Jude has ruptured the ligaments in her toe causing it to stick out much further than her other toes and be flat like a 'hare' foot. My vet has told me there is no viable treatment. It is unsightly but I'm obviously more worried that she will catch it or damage it more. Any help much appreciated.

Oh poor girl :(  I don't have any advice but hope she isn't in any pain with it - I'm sure someone will be along soon with some help!

Hi Angela
My large Ridgeback (approx 50 kg) did this three or four years ago.  The vet said they could try to operate but the chances of it working were very low as he is a big dog, and that it was unlikely to be any problem if just left.  I decided against putting him through an operation and carried on as usual.  He has been absolutely fine, never had a problem with it at all.  The nail wears slightly differently but it's not a problem.  I even continued to show him successfully, though a couple of judges have mentioned it - I just explain what has happened.
Hope that puts your mind at rest
Best wishes

Hi Carina, I'm glad your boy is doing well on it, that's good news :) Having an op isn't really an option.is it?...there isn't much skin around their toes and it isn't worth the risk of complications. I know racing greyhounds can suffer this injury but I've never seen it in a 'regular' dog.......lol. We can't even think how or exactly when it happened
Thanks for your help

Thanks Maria, she is favouring that leg but doesn't show any signs of pain when it is manipulated...at least that's something.
