i have a 3 day old puppy when born weighed 5oz ( low side for breed) the next day she dropped to 4.7oz and is back up today to 5.2oz. her weight as increased and is sucking well, but on weighing her today i saw a small amount of blood on the white flannel i wrapped her in for weighing, so i checked her belly button - all okay - so i made her urinate and again a small blob of blood, she is still very small around her rear end but is feeding well and active, just the normal puppy noises- has anyone experienced this before or maybe as a suggestion of what it could be - and a solution or is this a congential problem coming out, and we are going to lose her soon - she was one of 9 born but 2 passed away at deliverly, my breed is a toy breed and usually only has 3 - 4 - so i was amazed at the litter size - i can not see any outward signs (except the blood ) of any problems, please help. many thanks

I would contact the vet, as can't say I have ever seen blood in urine, but then I don't usually see urine until much older.
Goodness I would have thought 5 1/2 oz good size for toy pups, especially with 9, what were the other weights, how on earth did the bitch manage to get around with that lot inside her.
well she was big but she still managed i guessed at around 5 - 6 at the most, but they just kept on coming in two's a bit like noahs ark!! then i would feel her and i could feel another 2 , and ever after pup number 8, i could feel another but she seemed to have settled so just to be sure i visted my vets they xrayed her and it was another pup, so she had 8 naturally, i was not convinced that after all this time that pup 9 would still be alive - so she had to have a c-section and much to everyone suprise it was!!! and he weighed 8oz, i lost pup 2 and 4 i think during birth as they were touching the bums of the previous pups!! she had 8oz 7.7oz 7.4oz 6.2oz 5.7oz 5.5oz 5.2oz and the two that i lost were 6.4oz 6.5oz and she is only 6.8kg herself !!! she as been exhausted and i think if i'd have known i would have just elected for a c-section for her sake, i have had to hand feed her and she colasped on sunday due to exhaustion but seems much better now, she is eating well and as been on a drip at the vets just to boost her. she as had a litter previously 5 all fine. but i know what you mean about the urine usually mum sorts that out which she is, it must of been the flannel that touched her in the right place, i was going to ring the vets in the morning just wondered what it could be?

Hi,
I think she deserves a lot of pampering. Congratulations, what a litter!!
She deserves to be treated like a queen.
But! I do feel for her. On the serious side I would make sure she is o.k.
eating and drinking plenty as she may be feeling very weak and tired.
As Barbrara said take the pup to the vets.
Regards
Denese

We had this happen to a pup of ours, sadly she did die, but my vet said that if a pup pee's blood, there is a good chance it is dehydrated, if mum is only tiny and she has a large litter I would try and top the pups up to give mum a break

I would also seriously watch for any signs of eclampsia, which is more common in toy breeds and even more likely in such a large litter.
Did you take this puppy to the vet? We're all wondering how you got on - hope it'll be ok.

No idea about the pups, but just to say the size of newborns of course depends on the toy breed - Cavs are toys and 5oz is about an average size, I've heard of newborns at about 10oz before!!

Wow, 10 - 12oz is average for my breed at 20kg adult bitch weight, though I have had pups as small as 6oz and as large as 1lb 4oz,with the usual range 9 - 16oz.
sorry for the delay - well what a week
maisey collasped on sunday - so rushed to emergency vets - gave her calcium , just incase as blood machine was not working!!!!!! but they thought it was exhaustion. took her to my vet am monday - they did a blood test and calcium was low but within the normal levels, so again exhaustion. tuesday morning she collasped again, i could see her going so i scooped her up went straight to the vets, and she continued to the extreem that she was nearly fitting , fortunatley this happen at the vets, they gave her some more calcium and put her on a drip as they said she was dehyrated, they did some more blood tests and decided she was Anaemic, anyway things got worse on thursday she had no platelets to clot her blood so we had to do an emergency blood transfusion, fortunatley my sister had a big enough donor dog. all went well we kept visiting the vets every morning & night for blood test etc. she seemed to me to have a lot of discharge but as i have not had such a large litter before i was not sure wether this was okay, so the vet took a slide and she had an infection - so she was scan but okay there, so antibiotics for that. so the blood test results today showed that her platelets were back up and her temp was down she is still slightly anaemic. so back to vets in morning. i am absolutley exhausted been premanatley feeling sick for a week - not been to bed just incase and find myself following her around watching her, can not settle just incase every extra breath she takes worries me. in fact i am in permanent state of panic. but do you know what the surprising thing is - that all 7 puppies are still alive the big 2 have gone from 7.5oz at birth to well over a pound now - but the little two ( one who was passing blood ) are still on 6.5 oz but they are still alvie & well - i will keep you posted on any events that unfold - when i have looked closer at the puppies it seem that 5 are very mature compared to the two small ones so may be on top of it all we had some premature puppies as well. hope eveyone is well - vet did not know what is that as caused all this for poor maisey , and also the pup but he put the pup on an antibiotic just incase. - most of my pups are between 6oz and 8.5oz thses small pups seem very long which i suppose does not help!!
