Gemma, 10 today, is sick :(
Don't know what to do.
she hasnt really eaten for a few days, so gave her tripe and her normal biscuit last night.
I knew one of them had been sicking up food but assumed it was Ebba as she has just come into Season but am pretty sure it is Gemma.
There were to piles of regurgitated food where Gemma had been laying over night. I know one of the times she didnt even stand up as heard her being sick and noticed she was still lying down. D]ont know when she did the other one.
Just got back from a race and there were 3 piles of sick in my bedroom(she is in there on here own so know it was her) One was foood and pasta and water, the next was food and water, but the last was liquidy with a bit of blood in it. And it smelt a bit, not fowl but that could have been the raw tripe.
Her pooh is what mt son said looked like melted dark chocolate. This is the third day there has been some like that in the garden (Again didnt know if it was Ebba as didnt see her do it)
She has just been for a pooh again and only a lttle bit of dark came out.
what would you do??
Lea
- By Isabel Date 25.03.07 14:53 UTC
I would definately see a vet.
- By Lea Date 25.03.07 15:16 UTC
just spoken to the vet.
She said starve her, which is what I was going to do.
Give her little bits of water at a time. And take her in tomorrow to get her checked over.
Poor baby, on her birthday as well :( :( :( :(
Lea :(
- By Missie Date 25.03.07 17:21 UTC
Oh poor Gemma :(
{{hugs}}
- By newfiedreams Date 25.03.07 17:56 UTC
Lea, just a thought, keep an eye on her as very dark 'sticky' stool can indicate blood in the stool...this goes for humans as well as doggies!!! If you're worried take a small sample to the Vet if you take her in ok? Try not to panic, if she's ok she's ok and if she was losing a lot she would be very very ill! OK? Love Dawn XX
- By Lea Date 25.03.07 19:06 UTC
Just fed the other two. And Gemma didnt even flinch at me pouring food into bowls. And she is normally first there :( :(
The pooh looks more brown than black, so dont think there is blood in stools. but not 100%
Will find a sample tomorrow before taking her to the vets,
Mum said about thinking about how long to keep her going. But she has been fine up till now apart from her artheritis seriously slowing her down.
Will see if they can take bloods as well to make sure it isnt the rimadyl causing anything bed.
Lea
- By newfiedreams Date 25.03.07 19:11 UTC
Ahhh yes, the rimadyl CAN cause problems?! Suppose you have to check out every possible thing huh? Hope she's ok anyway, thinking of you Hun, love DawnX
- By Lea Date 25.03.07 19:18 UTC
If she doesnt pooh tomorrow mornig before taking to vets, should I take a sample of todays pooh or would that be worthless????
Lea???
- By LJS Date 25.03.07 19:31 UTC
Yes any samples will help :)

Poor girl :(

Keepings fingers and all paws crossed that she will be ok ;)

As Lucy says...yes!
- By Isabel Date 25.03.07 19:56 UTC
Definately take any sample you can Lea, I'm afraid old blood does turn dark so it has to be suspected and if there is any indication that there is any bleeding in the digestive tract you have to suspect the Rimadyl although any bad gastric upset can do it so but hopefully your vet will be considering all these possibles.  Hope he gets her sorted out soon for you.
- By Lea Date 25.03.07 20:43 UTC
She has just been sick again but no blood in it.
So will ring tomorrow morning and take her to work and take her in when they say. See what they say.
will try and get a stool sample tomorrow morning to take in.
Thanks
Lea.
- By Lori Date 26.03.07 10:48 UTC
Probably unrelated but when Milo was on painkillers, Metacam for him, he developed an ulcer that caused him to vomit bloody fluid.
- By Lea Date 26.03.07 17:30 UTC
Well, she has been called a FRAUD!!!!!
She was sick at 10 last night, so decided to take her to work with me and get her to vets at somepoint during the day.
It ended up that I was working out of town for the morning and she looked a bit brighter (She only got up at 7.30 as I was at work at 8) so I left her with my mum this morning for her to keep and eye on her and told her to ring if she was worried or if Gemma was sick.
Well she was walking around, as not used to being in mums house, laid down and slept, When mum moved into the other room she followed tail wagging,
I got in for lunch and took her outside and she bounded down the garden!!!!!!!
So she never did get to the vets!!!!!!!
She is ALOT brighter than yesterday and I will get some chicken and rice to give her for dinner to make sure ?I dont upset her stomach again!!!!!
Will take her for a checkup though, just to make sure she is ok.
Thanks everyone :)
Lea :)

Glad to hear this, Lea.  When they pull the "ill? Whose ill?" trick you don't know whether to be glad or mad do you :D
- By spiritulist [in] Date 26.03.07 19:08 UTC
That'a great news. She ate something she shouldn't???????
- By Lea Date 28.03.07 17:17 UTC
Just taken her to the vets for a checkup as she is still not 100%
He thinks he can feel a tumour in her stomach :(
She is going in for an Xray on friday and UI dont know if she will come out.
Lea.
- By Harley Date 28.03.07 18:06 UTC
Oh Lea :( Fingers crossed that he is mistaken. Will be thinking of you and sending positive thoughts your way.
- By HuskyGal Date 28.03.07 19:03 UTC
Fingers & Paws crossed here too for you Lea *sending CD positive vibes*... x
- By Lea Date 28.03.07 19:28 UTC
Has  anyone evr had a dog with a tumour in the stomach??
Am hopeing it will be an ulcer caused by the Rimadyl, or she has ingested something she shouldnt have.
Anything but a tumour as, I know if its that, she wont come home alive on friday :(
And my life is Gemma, we have been through hell and back togather. I cant loose her, not like this :(
- By Goldmali Date 28.03.07 19:31 UTC
I'm keeping everything crossed for it NOT to be a tumour, and for whatever it is to be treatable.

She is laying behind my computer chair. not somethig she bnormally does :(
Ebba earlier was licking Gemmas teats. didnt think much of it as Ebvba has just come into season, but do other dogs know if something is wrong???
- By Missie Date 28.03.07 21:23 UTC
Oh Lea :(
Thinking of you both
fingers, paws, everything crossed
Maybe Ebba just knows Gemma is feeling a bit low, a bit like they know when we are ?

- By Christine Date 29.03.07 05:11 UTC
Yes Lea, its almost certain thats what Bonnie had. But she didn`t have any symptoms like Gemma has. She wasn`t fussy on her food a night about a week before she died, she ate it but threw it up couple of hrs later but only that one time.

Really hope it isn`t what vet thinks & it`s something treatable :)
- By Lois_vp [gb] Date 29.03.07 07:22 UTC
This does sound like a classic Rimadyl reaction. Did you stop the tablets as soon as she fell ill ?
I do hope she recovers.

Sending positive thoughts to you and your girl xx
- By Lea Date 29.03.07 11:59 UTC
If its a Rimadyl reaction, what could the lump be???
Lea.
- By Lois_vp [gb] Date 29.03.07 12:13 UTC
Not sure what the lump could be but vomiting, loss of appetite and blood in the stools are 3 of the side effects of Rimadyl.
- By calmstorm Date 29.03.07 12:21 UTC
Thinking of you and Gemma. (((((((((hugs)))))))))
- By AlisonGold [gb] Date 29.03.07 14:06 UTC
Can't answer any of your questions but what other people have said about Rimadyl seems to make a lot of sense to me.  Maybe the lump is in fact a swelling from the bleeding area. Whatever it is I will be thinking of you and crossing everything that it is good news.
- By JaneG [gb] Date 30.03.07 04:42 UTC
Just wanted to say I hope the xray goes ok today - and something nice and treatable shows up. Thinking of you xx
- By scarlettwynter [gb] Date 30.03.07 06:38 UTC

I know it's not easy, Lea, but try and stay calm for Gemma :)  Things may not be as bad as you fear.
Whatever the outcome there'll be support for you here. :)

Thinking about you Lea - fingers, paws and everything crossed here :)

Poor you, Lea, and poor Gemma

Echoing what other people have said, try not to fear the worst.  A lump in the abdomen could be anything, and you've done the best thing getting her x-rayed.  Even if it proves to be a tumour it could be operable and/or benign.  Try to be positive for Gemma as if you're upset she'll pick up on that, and if the worst possible case should happen, remember, she has no idea about it.  It's horribly difficult for you but not for her.

Keeping everything crossed for you both
- By Lori Date 30.03.07 09:23 UTC
I hope you got some good news about Gemma this morning. Our thoughts and hopes are with you Lea.

what a relief!!  I've been checking in all day to see if there has been any news.

Thank you for letting us know, Lucy :)
- By Lea Date 30.03.07 18:27 UTC
Hiya everyone.
Thankyou all for the good wishes over the past few days.
Bare with me, this might be long as funny to explain.
took her in at 8.30 and left her there. I was told to leave as I was crying :((in the nicest possible way I assure you)
Heart in mouth all morning, and then the phione rings at 12.30.
Vet who sedtaed her was called out so the vet I know took over and rang me to find out some background.
The Xray on the stomach was fine. The Mass he could feel were, would you belive it, Pea gravel!!!!!!! Small gravel thats is all over my gardenm, she had been eating it. So now she just has to pass it :eek::eek::eek: So oil in her food.
The sickness and blood was probably caused by the gravel getting stuck and iratitating her inntestines.
But she has slight anemia and her white blood cell count is a bit low. And her spleen looked enlarged. She wanted to wait for the other vet to get back to have a look for a second opinion. as she was worried there was a tumour on the spleen and it might have to be removed. Heart back in my mouth.
Half hour later she rings again and says the spleen is buigger but due to her age it was okay.
Because of the bloods they think she has an infection so is now home on Strong anti biotics and back next week for a checkup!!!!
When I said to the vet my heart was in  my mouth, she said
"yours were, I remember the pyometria and I didnt want to go through that again!!!!"
Now thats a Vet who actually CARES :) :) :) :)
I really did think I was going to loose her today.
So thankyopu all for your positive thoughts :) :)
Lea :) :) :) :) :)
- By MariaC [gb] Date 30.03.07 18:27 UTC

So glad it is nothing sinister!
Onwards and upwards or should that be downwards!
Karen ;-)
- By Harley Date 30.03.07 18:45 UTC
So relieved that she is on the mend. At her age you would have thought she would have known better :D :D

When our dog was a fairly young pup I heard him retching followed by two strange doinging noises  as he threw up two LARGE pebbles onto the tiled floor . It frightened the life out of me as I have no idea where he had got them from. I still have to watch him like a hawk when we are at the beach as the shingle has a strange fascination for him.
- By MariaC [gb] Date 30.03.07 18:51 UTC
Oh no, we have gravel in Jasper's toilet area
