How do you rat proof your kennels.
- By sam Date 28.03.07 13:08 UTC
by keeping a lakeland terrier!!

Keep anything edible (and where rats are concerned thats not just things labelled 'food') locked away in metal containers.

Prevent their access - rats like little narrow holes and runways in dark corners.

Avoid giving them somewhere to hide, see above, keep everything as open and bright as you can, regularly move things like bales of paper bedding so no one fancies setting up home under or in them.

As sam says, terrier, or big vicious cat.... good quality snappy traps in prime locations.

If you have electrisity out there then you could plug in a sonic (think thats what they are) rat/mice detterance :)

Rat poison boxes that your dogs cannot possibly get to (only do this if you are 100% positive your dogs can't get to it.

or rescue an outdoor, rat killing cat! :D  There must be one in rescue somewhere :)

one of my outside buildings has had holes with a 2 inch diameter chewed through the sides (wooden) overnight from a rat:mad: Short of putting metal wire over every single wooden surface, there is nothing you can do to stop them eating their way in.

mmmm, wood is tasty......

yeah theres only so much you can do - obviously if you are building things you can apply your mind to rat proofing them at the time but for pre-existing things sometimes theres nowt you can do but make sure they meet a sticky end once they have got in.

Thanks for your replies. Will rats bite dogs?

Yes, if they feel threatened. Ratting terriers need to be very reactive.
