Topic Dog Boards / General / I have finally found it!

I'm soooo excited.
Sorry just have to share with someone who will understand...
I get funny looks from non-doggy friends,
why would someone want to bring a puppy from another country and wait for that long too???
AND why all the excitement???

I have finally found a combination I like and have reserved a puppy!
The babies are in Finland and will only be due end of summer, so I only have about 1.5 years to wait and be excited!
Not sure how I will make it through...
Well at least I will meet the parents in few months!

Any tips on importing a puppy are welcome :).
I know the pet-passport stuff but for example all the paperwork, registering in UK etc, haven't got a clue, yet!
But I suppose I have plenty of time to find out...

Roll on 2008 so I can have my baby home!

I know just how you feel, it seems such a long time but will be worth the wait. Do you mind if I ask what breed?

A Leo...
Can't wait!!
I shall start counting down the days from the mating.
Lets just hope there is a little girl there or I'm not sure how I react after all that wait for nothing!!
Not to mention having to start looking again or wait for the next litter which would just be tooooooo long (or I might not like the dog:rolleyes:)

I'm doing this with a Groenendael ... she comes into this country on June 12th ...as you say the wait is horrible, we've been over a few times to spend a few days with her ( going again in 2 weeks time) and it's so heartbreaking to leave her and come home.

It's quite a costly business especially if the breeder won't keep the pup for the qualifying period (around 9-10 months in total) . we have paid out more than £3000 on foster care costs/paperwork/visits/etc etc but this is spread out over the time so does'nt hurt quite so much LOL.

She will need to satisfy all the pet passport requirements - contact Defra for the guidelines - and to register her here you will need an import pedigree naming you as the new owner - you will need to contact the country of origin's Kennel Club to get this - for the French KC I had to send off the original pedigree/registration document and they sent me back an import one. This then gets sent to our Kennel Club.

Don't worry too much at this stage about all the rules and regs - you will work your way through it at each stage and you can always come on here for help.

I believe that the rules are due to be changed soon so that pups can come in once they have a clear blood test ( at around 3 months) - this would be MUCH better - and cheaper  - but I'll believe it when it happens LOL  :D

oh great another leo on the forum, you wont regret it they are marvolous dogs, full of fun and mischef. what are you getting a dog or bixxx?

Hi Yvonne,
I don't suppose you have heard anything concrete about the rule change have you?

Thanks,
Jeff.

This would really benefit those with numerically small breeds of foreign origin.

Very few people are prepared to export from Scandinavia into Quarantine, and bringing in an adolescent even if the breeder can keep it is not ideal as it will be harder to integrate with ones dogs and may be used to an entirely different lifestyle.

I hope there is but if there isn't the wait will still be worth it for what you want. I was due to bring a pup in this year but now have to wait until next year and like you say, if a dog of the right colour is born. On the up side if DEFRA do ever change the rules I could maybe get him early, fingers crossed. The time will soon go I am sure.

I know Leo's are wonderful!
I got my first dog, a Leo -93 and have been faithful to the breed since.
I was only 12 years old but would not have any other breed.
My parents -Lets get a Labrador or Golden like everybody else- went to the deaf ears, I would not want a dog at all unless it was a Leo. I would wait until I would be "old enough" to have one as I was understandably told they are too big for you to handle!
After a year of not giving up and settling on another breed (I had wanted a dog as long as I could remember) my mum decided that it really must be what I want and I got my Bonnie.

Got a bit side tracked, sorry...

That would be wonderful if Defra changes the rules and puppies will be able to enter the country a lot earlier than now, as it can limit you quite a lot having to find somebody to look after the pup and yes it is expensive, I have been saving the pennies for 6 months now and will keep saving untill the pup comes home.
I bet there will be lot more dogs coming in if the rule changes, which would do a lot of good to many breeds.
Would anybody have any idea when this might happen?

My mum will be looking after the pup while we are waiting for her pet-passport.
I will be getting a little girl as I hope to start breeding if the pup is all I hope she will be.

I'm lucky to have my mum, who already has experience looking after a giant pup as I know I would find it difficult to find somebody who I would trust to look after my precious baby. And this obviously cuts off the cost of boarding too which is a bonus!
Leos being such a large breed they are so easy to spoil with wrong feeding etc. and you need to know how to handle a sensitive Leo mind too (Leo people know what I mean :) ) so that the pup grows up to be that wonderful confident adult.

I think the change has been talked about to bring us in line with other EU countries - the situations IS ridiculous - after all if the blood test comes back clear then why do we have to wait a further 6 months ?.

When I went over to choose my girl the breeder had buyers from other EU countries - Italy , Spain and France - all choosing on the same day ( I had second pick bitch behind the breeder - so everyone had to wait until I could get over there :D ) - all the other buyers just took their pups home that same day - I had the choice of placing my 12 week old puppy in quarantine with all the lack of socialisation and stimulation that involves :( or handing her over to a 'Foster family' to care for.

I have been lucky that the people I found have done a great job as far as her socialisation is concerned - she is a happy, confident, forward going pup ( a BIG plus in my breed) - but as you say she will be 10 months when she comes in and will be much harder to integrate into our existing pack than if she was 3 months .

So far I have only heard rumours of a change, with no time scale mentioned - fingers crossed it won't be too long for your sake :D

Not even as simple as that between countries.  To get a dog into Sweden or Norway it has to have a titre test that is at least 120 days and less than 364 days from a Rabies vaccination.  So my lot that had their Blood tests done  month after their Rabies would have to have it redone.  for that reason I am waiting for four months before having the blood test Deon on my new pup.  I am not likely to want to travel and return to UK with her for a year or so.

:) :) :)
The bitch has been scanned and she is pregnant!!
Shall I start counting now??

Just bumping this up to ask if anybody has heard any whispers of the entry rules changing sometime soon?
Probably wishful thinking....

Did I mention that I'm excited?
I actually have a puppy... well a scan picture of some puppies!

Bet you are excited :D :D All good things come to those who wait :)
