Hi All

I am posting this message for a friend of mine that wants a bulldog puppy, she has got some books on them to do more research before getting a puppy and has also contacted some breeders to find out prices of pups and waiting lists, what she wants to know is do they produce high levels of dander, i know they are a moulting dog and that they shed fur because they do not have to be groomed like my westie but i am concerned about the levels of dander that they may shed as she suffers from asthma like myself and it doesn't say in the bulldog books whether they shed high levels of dander, i was surprised that westies were high dander producing dogs until i looked it up but cannot find anything about the bulldogs, also would like to hear from anybody on here with bulldogs to see what they think of them as to whether they make good pets?
Thanks
Helen

If you go here: http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/download/1527/hsbulldog.pdf you will be able to see the results of the Kennel club/Animal Healthcare Trust health survey.  this will give you a lot of information such as longevity frequency of health problems etc.

my friend had a bulldog when I had my daughter and he was absolutely brilliant with her - even when she used to tickle between his toes and tickle his gums.  Another friend of mine had two bulldogs and they were also brilliant with children - none of the three of them were keen on walks though and both sets of friends gave up trying in the end....

I cant say what is typical though because thats the only knowledge I have....

Hi just wanted to say that I have a friend who has a Bulldog and it is lovely but it does bring on my allergies/asthma and also I get really bad hives if it licks my skin! I reckon if anyone has a tendency to allergies they need to get up close to the breed themselves to see if it brings on a reaction as different breeds affect people very differently!

Some breeds are more allergenic than others - but individuals will react differently to different breeds sometimes; spending time with them is a very sensible suggestion. Ideally I would spend 24hrs with them (or mroe to the point in the environment where they're living if possible) to get an idea, as it tends to be allergy to the fur and dander of which there tends to be mroe in the surroundings.

I'm allergic to dogs, but manage quite happily with the two I've got. I do tend to get wheezy if I'm around a dog with skin disease though - they seem to produce more grease and dander.

Hope that's some help?

I should add my friend who had the bulldog has asthma, eczema, nut allergy, feather allergy - you name it she's probably allergic to it.  But she was fine with the bulldog....  so as the others say it just depends...

My friend who is a vet nurse is fine with most other animals, but bulldogs bring her out in a rash if she touches them. I've never seen it happen with any other breeds or species she deals with so it must be bulldogs in particular!

Weird, isn't it?  I have a client with the most gorgeous little French bulldog and while I'm very fond of the dog and can't resist cuddling her, the result is I spend the rest of the day red and itchy!
