Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / My decking is a toilet???
- By Geeky Girl [gb] Date 26.03.07 17:02 UTC
Hello,
One of my boys goes to the toilet (number 2's only) on our decking. He goes down to the grass to do his wee's  I don't really want him toileting on my decking but to get to the grass he must cross the decking so I can't block it off. Any ideas how to stop him?
Thanks

How old is he?

It took a few months before our puppy learned where he had to go - he used to choose the patio and no particular place on the patio it was everywhere   We persevered and kept taking him to the 'toilet' area and by the time he was 6 months he'd got the idea!

I think you might have to wash your decking down with a bio detergent to remove the scent too!

Good luck :)

He is now 13 months old and should really know better by now . I have washed the decking with the power washer and retreated it that is why I woud prefer him not to go there

I doubt he does know better :) It will seem a perfectly reasonable place to him unless you let him know where you prefer him to go.  Like Marie says you have to extend toilet training to be specific where you want him to go.  So that means going right back to stage one always going outside with him taking him straight over the decking without letting him stop and when he is in the right spot encourage him to go.  When he goes give him a command signal and repeat this many times until you get to the stage that he will go when he hears the command.  Repeat this again and again until you are sure he does understand.

A trick I've read of is to feed and water him where he is not supposed to be pooping.  Clean up the poop of course but then maybe a week or so of feeding and watering on the deck should convince him not to go there.  Hopefully he is not, nor will become, a self re-cycler.

My lab will drop one right next to her food bowls!

She just sees it as a necessary evil so just does it where ever she happens to be when the urge arises (except in doors)!

Where as my akita will spend hows finding the exact spot that she wants to go on!

(Oh and my Lab is 4 yrs old)

We got quite lucky and took the advise of when they are you show them where their place is and usingwords of 'go wee' etc and reward them wiht lots of praise when they go to that spot. Never clean up with them around. that was the advise that I got and it only took a few months. Now we moved house and have a much bigger garden, we are trying to train her just to go to the back part where we put gravel down, so its back to basics for us.
