My flatcoat Duibh recently had an op for patellar luxation, but has had problems with it and had to have it redone today. :( He's whining and all miserable at the moment. :( :( Poor lad. Please keep your fingers crossed that everything goes smoothly this time around.

Have got everything crossed for your boy, hope he makes a full recovery this time..............we are trying to get over TPLO surgery at the moment, so the same area :)

My boy is 8 weeks past his op for a patella luxation. He had a dodgy few weeks but recovered well and is now enjoying his hydro therapy. He still skips sometimes and has sore moments but is happy in himself and the vet says he will be almost good as new.

So we are wishing the same for your boy.

Cheers

I do hope things go better with the second op, Terry. It must be awful seeing him so miserable.
My younger dog was born with patella luxation but we decided against surgery. Five years on he's still fine but I realise he's probably the exception rather than the rule.
Fingers crossed for you :)

Hello - sorry I've not updated for ages, I know people like to hear how things are going on, various other problems including being ill and my father dying have made me get a bit distracted. :(

However, Duibh is doing reasonably well. :) Numerous sedations, GAs, Xrays etc later, he has had all his implants and various bits of metal work removed and can now do a lot more (he is ecstatically happy about being able to go for walks and not being shut in a cage all the time). The leg seems to have healed and he can use it, so much better news than when I thought he was going to end up a three legged flat coat. :) The only problem is that he still has a persistent limp all the time, though obviously between the stiffness and muscle wastage it will take ages to build him back to where he's been, the specialist isn't entirely happy as he thinks the limp should be improving week on week and it's just staying the same, so he's going to take another look at Duibh. But overall he's doing much much better than he was a few months ago.

Glad he's regained some freedom, that must be a joy for him. My boy limped for a long time after his TPLO surgery; much longer than normal but he was injured for months before. He was too young when he first tore the cartilage. Hydrotherapy was the magic bullet for him. He was afraid/out of the habit of putting that foot down. One swimming session and he started using the leg again. Part of it was just building his confidence that he could use that leg without the dramatic pain he had before. Might be worth discussing with the surgeon?

Great news that he is on the mend :)

I agree with Lori about Hydrotherapy, it really helps to build the muscle, have a word with the surgeon - I know timing is crucial with any exercise!

Don't despair it will take a long time before he is 100% better, but he will get there!

Maria  :)
