I probably all ready know the answer to this but would like others opinions. What would you do??
My girl SHOULD be on her 61 day of gestation tomorrow, no scan but all signs are there, I have been taking her temp for the last few days, Yesterday it was 101.2 last night it was 100.7.
The thing is I have an appointment at a London Hospital tomorrow, I have been waiting for the re - referral as haven't been for a check up since 2002!!  I am in good health, no problems but just going to have a check up, the thing is i am not up to much after being there with all the tests they do on my eyes etc:
So I planned for my mum to have my kids (take them to school etc) and also to watch my girl, she is lovely my mum but is not a doggie person.  And I don't want to miss a thing if my girl does go into labour!!

So the question is Should I go to the appointment?  My girl is more important to me then anything but she may not give birth until her due date!  oh I am so confused and don't know what to do!!!!
HELP
- By STARRYEYES Date 22.03.07 14:08 UTC
If it was me I would be at home with my pregnant girlie by my side!!
- By Val [gb] Date 22.03.07 14:11 UTC
I would keep my appointment but have an experienced breeder who I could trust to do the right thing to stay with my girl. :)
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 22.03.07 14:13 UTC
Ditto Val. She may not give birth for several days yet - day 68 isn't unheard of - so I'd go for the apoointment.
- By welshie [in] Date 22.03.07 14:53 UTC
i agree keep your appointment if no signs of her starting how far are you from london is this her or your first litter is there anyone experienced handy ?
- By carole [gb] Date 22.03.07 15:25 UTC
i think you should go to your appointment they are hard to get and if anything happened i'm sure your mum should be able to contact vet if she needed to
- By lumphy [gb] Date 22.03.07 15:53 UTC
Hi

I agree go to your appointment. As long as someone is at home with your bitch I dont see why you have to cancell if in the morning you think she is showing signs of starting think again.

I suppose all you more experienced breeders have more confidence in yourself than me .
I went to bed for a sleep left her fast asleep with my hubby and she had the first pup on the put up bed....right next to him 2 days early.
eighty miles away I am afraid I would  definitely be staying at home. :)
- By Gemini05 Date 22.03.07 15:57 UTC
Thanks everyone, this is her first litter and my first large breed litter.
We live about 80 miles from London so it would be a whole day trip and by the time we actually get seen at the hospital as I think they give everyone the same appointment time!!!

My girl is ok, her undercarriage is developed well, on Monday she had a white cloudy mucus discharge, she is still eating (really hungrey!) I will take her temp tonight and try and decide from that.

I do not want to miss anything with her!! and I know its not her due date until sunday but I am getting nervous!!

My appointment is important to me also so I am still confused I think!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- By JaneG [gb] Date 22.03.07 16:27 UTC
How far away does your girls breeder live? Do you know any other experienced local breeders that you've maybe met at ringcraft or shows? If so I would ask one of them to be on standby, and give your Mum their number to call if there is any change at all in your girl and then go for your appointment :)
- By welshie [in] Date 22.03.07 17:03 UTC
lots of things to consider 80 miles is a good hour and a bit then if your going by car depends what time and traffic etc if i were in your shoes and by what you,ve said i,d be waiting until the actual morning to decide Is it too cheeky to ask but is it quite an important health app or could you wait ?
- By AlisonGold [gb] Date 23.03.07 16:47 UTC
Sorry I cannot offer advise, you unfortunately have got to make that decision, however, my girl is due Sunday too, so good luck whatever you decide to do, hope everything goes well for you and your girl.
- By Gemini05 Date 22.03.07 19:40 UTC
just taken her temp and it is 100.6 not much difference from last night (100.7)
So what now???
I have spoken to my girls breeder and she strongly advises me to not go to the appt, her breeder lives about 1 hour drive from me.
I do have a couple of other breeder friends but most local one has just had a litter of 8 DDB!
So still none the wiser!!
Can dogs go into labour at a temperature of 100.6??
- By weima [gb] Date 22.03.07 20:19 UTC
My bitch had pups when her temperature was 100.5 so it is possible.
- By Gemini05 Date 22.03.07 20:57 UTC
did your girl show any other signs of having her pups when her temp was 100.5?
- By weima [gb] Date 22.03.07 22:00 UTC
She was clearly uncomfortable & also started panting. Didn't expect her to have them though until her temp dropped which it didn't.
- By welshie [in] Date 23.03.07 13:19 UTC
please update us What did you do Hows your bitch has she started yet?
- By GoldenGirl3 [gb] Date 24.03.07 07:19 UTC
I tried not to book any appointments until after my girls EDC.  Sometimes however, I realise this is unavoidable.  Murphey's law means that even when my appointments fall within 3 days before the EDC (ie 60 days) or 3 days after (ie 66 days) my girl will usually have her pups on whatever date it is I have booked my appointments!

In my honest opinion I would not go to the appt unless I had someone experienced to attend my bitch in my absence.  I have had the temperature taking thing work very well for for me and also a couple of friends, but recently another friends dog showed no temp drop at all, nor nesting signs and whelping came on very suddenly, so I would err on the side of caution and try to stay with your lass if possible.

All the very best of luck and please do let us know how things go.
- By Gemini05 Date 24.03.07 16:38 UTC Edited 25.03.07 08:32 UTC
Well I did go to my appointment!!  took my girls temp in morning and it was 101.7 shot right up the graph!! So I left her in the capable hands of my mum (bless her) and a friend of mine that breeds
Appointment went well, just lots of hassle getting into london on the tube etc:
Took her temp last night and it was 100.5 and last night I swear I felt pups move!!!  she seems to have grown again over the last 24 hours !!!
Keep you posted
- By JaneG [gb] Date 24.03.07 17:42 UTC
Glad you went, and glad she waited :)
- By ice_queen Date 24.03.07 19:17 UTC
Good to see that you went to your appointment and your girl held on :)  At least you had two people, one being an experianced breeder there for your bitch.  Unfortantly sometimes our lives cannot revolve 100% around our dogs.

Good luck with the litter....bet you are getting VERY excited! :)
- By welshie [in] Date 25.03.07 11:24 UTC
glad it all turned out well best bit to come yet
- By GG1 [gb] Date 26.03.07 20:09 UTC
Any news yet? I have everything crossed for you XX
- By Gemini05 Date 25.03.07 14:59 UTC
Ah today is my girls first due date from first mating, her temp is 100.5 and she is HUGE!
I tried to take her for a little walk just now but she was not herself, she walked into the woods with me and just stayed with me and kept looking back towards home, so I brought her home and she is now watching our sunday roast cook in the oven!!!
We can feel the pups moving around really well, so its me on the air bed tonight in the lounge with her for the next few weeks!
I just can't wait!!!!!!!!
- By Gemini05 Date 26.03.07 08:49 UTC
Had to use this thread as CD have locked my new thread where I needed urgent advice so hopefully members will realise although I am the same poster the the subject has changed!
Anyway, took my girls temp this morning about 5.30am and it was 99.97f.
She has been ripping up newspaper in her box last night so hopefully things will start moving on, this is day 66 from first mating and 63 from her last mating.
got a bit nervous as breeder was concerned her temp was 101.08 at 8 pm last night but took it again 1 1/2 hours later and it was 100.5
I am a nervous reck here!
- By STARRYEYES Date 26.03.07 09:21 UTC
sounds like things are on the move ....good luck
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 26.03.07 09:28 UTC
Looks like you should have a litter in the next 48 hours. :)
- By Gemini05 Date 26.03.07 12:07 UTC
Oh I need a shrink!
Sorry guys, me again, I am getting very inpatient!
My girl has just eaten her lunch went out for a wee and now gone back out into the front porch where it is nice a cool and gone asleep!
I know I have got to be patient but is this ok?
She was panting on and off through night, ripped up newspaper and now its all gone quite/???
Sorry to keep going on but I am pulling my hair out here!
- By lumphy [gb] Date 26.03.07 12:14 UTC
Hi

Calm down, luckly she seems to know what she is doing. All sounds perfectly normal. She is just getting ready sometimes it can take a couple of days of this type of behaviour.

When she is ready they will come out. As long as she is calm, not distressed, eating and not pushing she is ok.

Stay with her but  put your feet up with a cuppa and relax while you can

Honestly she is fine

- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 26.03.07 12:14 UTC
Relax, stage 1 labour can go on for up to 48 hours. If she's relaxed then you can as well. :) Get some sleep while she is, because you'll probably be awake all night!
- By newfiedreams Date 26.03.07 14:08 UTC

Good luck, your girl is imminent. Keep a flask of tea next to the whelping box for you and all the nescessary for your bitch and pups nearby. Wishing you all the best for a stress free labour and birth with your girl and of course healthy pups at the end xx
