Topic Dog Boards / Feeding / Off Colour??
- By kerrib Date 21.03.07 09:47 UTC
This could fall into one of 3 boards but I opted for this one as it started with food.

We are now on our 3rd day of Misty not eating.  OH fed her as usual in the morning on Monday but apparently she took ages eating it (very very unlike her, we would be lucky if the food had time to settle in the bowl before its gone).  She took a good 10 mins.  She seemed fine in herself.  I fed her in the evening and she took a mouthful and that was it.  Left the rest and didn't even flinch when our cat, Bob, who usually stays on the stairs came down and starting eating her food.  Misty just looked at him and wandered off again.  (Normally he only has to twitch a whisker and she chases him! :D).  I gave her a piece of bread which she ate and then some cheese which she wolfed down.

Yesterday OH gave her half what she normally gets and again she took a mouthful and left the rest.  I lifted her bowl this time and we left it till later in the evening before giving it to her again and this time she ate it all (albeit took a few mins)

This morning, her food is untouched.  Tempted her with an apple (she absolutely goes nuts for them).  She just took it and then left it. Also, she has been mopping around and not her usual self.  She has whined a few times and paced a little over the last couple of days.

The more worrying thing is this morning, she snarled at my son for no reason.  I was just behind him when he walked past her and she growled/snarled really loudly.  My son screamed in response (more of a reflex action).  Misty is now looking really sorrowful in her bed.  She wont come out of it.  I have already looked in her mouth and checked her out but can't find anything unusual.

Any ideas as to why she is acting so odd and what I should do?  Got a note in the post this morning from the vets saying its time for her annual checkup and boosters etc.  Should i make this appointment for today?

I would as it sounds like she is not feeling very well and if she has growled then it is often a sign of leave me alone I am not feeling too good.

I would see if you can get an appointment today to get her checked out.

Let us know how you get on :)

If she were mine I'd make an appointment to see the vet today, the sooner the better. Her behaviour is that of a dog which feels very unwell, possibly in actual pain, and the sooner she is examined and treated the better.

What's her temperature?
- By kerrib Date 21.03.07 10:02 UTC
Never thought of checking her temp but then saying that I have to confess and say I havent got anything to do it with.  Did have when we first got her (got everything that was suggested and more that we have never used) but Misty got to it

I didn't worry too much to start with as I know sometimes dogs can get choosy with food especially as she ate the bread and cheese and a couple of titbits OH gave her but its been a while now and with her behaviour today, hence the post.  Have just tried ringing the vet but engaged, will keep trying.

Just spoken to the Vets.  The earliest appointment is 4.20 pm.  She has just ventured out of her bed so I put her bowl back down and she has just eaten some of it.  But has now gone back to sleep in a sunspot in our dining room!   Just checked her over again which she was happy for me to do but I dont see anything untowards.

Hopefully it is nothing serious and Misty will be back to her usual GR bouncy self soon.

Take her to the vets straight away, nothing worse than leaving it and leaving it until you finally crack, your vet will appreciate you taking her now rather than a call at 2 in the morning. I cannot advise what is wrong with your bitch, that is for your vet to do. I do however hope that she will be ok.

She seems to be behaving as if she is having a false pregnancy? When did she have her last season? Is she spending a lot of time in her bed or a cosy spot she may feel nice to have pups in? My Treacle if in the middle of one and has not eaten properly for 5 days, she is monopolizing the Under Dad's Desk spot that everyone likes and is doing a lot of squeaking, she does it every season so we are used to it and usually after about a week gets fed up of waiting for pups that don't appear and gets on with life again. Just have a check to see if she is producing milk, Treacle always does, There are things the vet can give to shorten it if you want but we just let Treacle work through it, all bitches have false pregnancies to a greater or lesser degree after a season, some you may never notice and some go the hole hog. Just a possibility, but a vet check should sort it out for you.

That was my first thought as well Merlot but she came in on 27th December (first season) so going by dates I thought that it would have been too long ago?  I did check this morning just to make sure she didn't have any milk.  And no she certainly didn't have any encounters with eager males :D

However in answer to your question about being in her bed.  She got out of it and found a nice sunspot but that only lasted for a couple of mins before she got back in. And that is where she has stayed since.

edited to say: just spoke with OH and he said he caught her digging/scratching at our front door mat yesterday morning.  But surely it has been too long since her season to be anything connected with that?

If she came in on 27th dec then she would have been mated about two weeks after plus nine weeks and that would be about right? you say she has been off colour for about 5 days?. It would be a good idea to have the vet look at her but I feel it is very possible she is having one. Hope all works out OK and let us know what the vet said. Treacle is a past master at it, she will only eat her favourite tid-bits and she will willingly go out for walks but the rest of the time she snuggles up asleep....and squeaks! She sometimes has a collection of toys to take with her or failing that Merlot, although 2 stone heavier, is a willing puppy and likes to be Mothered by her Auntie Treacle. Treacle is really only happy when she has a litter but she is not having any for the forseable future and is miffed about it??

Well, been to the Vets and even he commented on the fact that *she looks lively enough*.  Why did she perk up at the sight of the vet??!!!

Anyway, I have paid a complete stranger money to tell me that there is absolutely nothing wrong with my dog and that she is experiencing a phantom pregnancy .   She had a thorough check over from the vet who gave her a clean bill of health.  He said not to worry abou the loss of appetite as she is eating something so basically just to keep an eye on her and said that it should be towards the end of the phantom so hopefully no further problems.

Kerri

My bitch used to behave like this with her phantoms - usually about 2-3 months after the end of her last season.  Went off food, got kind of depressed - sometimes produced milk but not everytime.
Anyway Kerrib - I paid a vet for a routine spay - quoted at £210 - Actually paid £1300.00 due to complications and another emergency op followed by hormone probs and dry skin due to stress and anti biots.  None of which covered by insurance because I chose to have her admitted for a routine op!!!  That was back in November and the skin settled down about 2 weeks ago. Then the other day she ripped her nail running around - Only £70 this time

Why did she perk up at the sight of the vet??!!!.............Don't they always :P :D even at times when thet are ill...........;)

At least you know whats wrong with her, and its nothing serious. Put your mind at rest, even if it did cost ;)

You could give dorwest a ring they may have a suggestion to make things easier for your girl.

I have also been told that to mess up her routine and give lots more exercise will help.
