Topic Other Boards / Foo / Blossom tree?
- By luvhandles Date 20.03.07 21:57 UTC
I have spotted a few trees recently that I assume are a type of blossom - no foilage I dont think but they have huge pink upright flower buds and look oriental to me. Does anyone know the name of the tree I am talking about? They are so beautiful.

Thank you

They are gorgeous aren't they? I used to drive past an older house with 2 of these in the garden and even in winter their shapes were amazing. In Spring, well, you can imagine how the blossoms looked :)

What are they like throughout summer - foilage wise?

Nice.  They usually form a very pleasing round shape, you can get them in varying heights but I don't think any of them a terribly large.  The downside is if you plant one you may have to wait up to 10 years for it to blossom although I think they have bred species that do it a little quicker.  I think the modern trend for gardening in the here and now denies us a lot of things that people used to plant for the future even if they were not around, sold up or whatever , to witness it's maturity.

Around here they seem to be flowering most of the time!!!!
The best show is now and then the leaves come and they seem to flower, or be budding to flower all throught the spring and summer, and right to the frosts.
Which is really annoying as I go to prune one (You are not meant to prune at all, but there is only so big a tree can be allowed to get in a garden) and have to prune in stages as the flowers die LOL

I have noticed quite a few in the North West here showing a small repeat flush of blossom in the late summer but not continuous yet.

That's really lovely too, Stacey. Doesn't grow too big either :)

Magnolia 'Stellata' is a lovely smaller version as well and it comes into flower when still quite young - unlike some other varieties.
