I would value everyone's opinions on the use of the injection to stop bitches coming into season.  It has been suggested by the breeder of my bitch to go down this route as her first two seasons were only four months apart.  I've spoken to my vet who said a very definite NO and then explained all the risks such as pyos and reduced fertility.  He did say there were cases when the injection can be useful but not when there is any likelihood of wanting to breed.   Obviously my bitch's health is the most important factor and I would in no way consider using any drug which would risk her health.  Has anyone on here used this?  What was the outcome?  Just curious as obviously different vets would have different opinions and I've near enough made up my mind not to do it anyway.

My opinion is that 2 seasons doesn't really tell you that the seasons will always be just 4 months apart.  It might just be that they will settle into longer cycles.

What's the problem with short cycles?

That was quick!  The reason I was recommended this route was that I show her.  If she's going to come in every 4 months (her grandmother does I believe) then there will only just be three months from the end of one season and the start of the next.  Also she will forever be dropping coat.  I am hoping that she will at least go five months this time and will just have to wait and see.

I would say very definatly NO as well, for the simple reason I don't believe in playing with hormones unless you absolutly have to. Listen to your vet :)

I have used it to no ill effect but would not feel it a permanent solution. Pepsi is five now and after a very hairy C-Section when she bled like a stuck pig and we nearly lost her. I would have liked to have her spayed but the vet was wary due to her reaction. Now I let her have one season then inject prior to the next so we only have one a year. This is easier to cope with with three bitches in the house. I did have the whole lot done two years ago when they had to stay with a friend who has two dogs and they were all due in and have not had any problems since then, they all came back in the next due time and Merlot had a lovely litter of nine no problems. But you really need her to settle into her routine for a couple of years before making any hasty decisions, she may settle to a longer period as she matures.
