Topic Dog Boards / Showing / RBOB Question?
- By beagler [gb] Date 19.03.07 20:55 UTC Edited 19.03.07 20:58 UTC
Why is it that when at open shows RBOB always seems to go to a dog in the challenge. Judges very rarely if ever call the dog which lost to the BOB back in the ring it always goes to another class winner. The last open show we went to we beat a Champion in open and went BOB but the champion was not called back in and RBOB went to our young bitch who won the Junior class. I am not complaining at all but the champion I thought would have gone RBOB.

I've always found 2nd to BOB does get called in!  The mont of times we have had two bitches in the line up and it's gone to one class winner and reserve behind them at both champ shows and open shows! lol

In our breed they generally call in 2nd in the class of whoever got BOB.

Same here - don't think I recall when 2nd to BOB hasn't been called back in.  Sometimes it goes to them and other times it goes to another class winner!

I am a little confused!! I thought BOB to was between two, a dog and bitch one winning BOB and the other BOS.
In the line up is it not all the class winners dogs, for Best Dog, Reserve Best Dog then all class winners for bitches for Best Bitch and Reserve Best Bitch then those two go head to head for BOB.
Like wise in Champ shows with tickets its Dog CC, Dog RCC, Bitch CC, Bitch RCC then BOB. Or am I missing something??
I was at a Ch Show in open dog where the judge could not choose between my dog and one other and no word of a lie she walked us probably ten times, kept handling the dogs and must have taken more than 5 mins to choose the other dog as the open dog winner. In the line up for the DCC she gave the open winner the ticket but never called us back in yet she could not split them in the class:confused:

Thats the case at Champ shows Herbiedax but most open shows will only have a few classes for your breed, for instance junior, post grad and open - and these classes will be for dogs and bitches. The class winners go back in for BOB, if a RBOB has to be chosen it will be from the remaining class winners or the second place in the BOBs class.

Said in more succint way than me!!!

Someone else will probably explain far better than me... but I'll give it a go!!

At an open show all unbeaten dogs go in for BOB, sometimes there is RBOB on offer and also BOS (best opposite sex) - this is not always the case.

So the class winners - providing unbeaten line up for BOB - the dog or bitch is then chosen.  The judge may then call in the dog or bitch that came 2nd to that class winner who can then give RBOB to that do or bitch - or they may choose another unbeaten class winner.

Now on the BOS - this may be the RBOB if another sex or indeed another class winner if different sex - not sure I have got this right or explained it at all well!

I can not explain why the judge in your champ show didn't call you back in - that is a question for the judge/steward! I guess - but its not something I have seen but it is the judges decision to do this or not!

In all the time I have been showing even in open shows where as you say there are mixed classes I have only ever seen the winners of the classes pulled back for BOB and and never seen a RBOB placed only BOS if there is one. At open shows our breed judges calls back all unbeaten dogs regardless of where they were placed so long as they were beaten by a bitch and likewise then call back all unbeaten bitches to compete for BOB .
The only time I have seen a RBOS in Breed is at Ch Shows were there are no tickets and I have one or two of them!!
We are fortunate enough to nearly always be in the line up for BOB and we either win it or win BOS or win nothing.
As for us not winning the RCC at the Ch show I was just proving that the Judge can make some funny decisions when it is expected that they will do something else.ie place a class winner over a Champion dog at a open show, well again seen it many times even to the point that at Ch shows I have seen the ticket and more so RCC's go to Minor Puppy and Puppy beating all Champ dogs

I - or rather my dog - has one RBOB and one RBIB from an Open show - mixed classes.
Her sister and mother also have BOB and RBOB from Open shows. Could it be that they only do reserves when it is done on the Group System?

Its up to the judge, they can ask for 2nd to the BOB to be called back in or they can award the reserve to one of the other class winners without reconsidering the 2nd placed dog.

I have been showing for nine years and also stewarded a few times and my wife and I can only think of one occasion when a non class winner was called back in for RBOB at Gen Open Shows. Maybe its just beagles.
- By rachelsetters Date 20.03.07 14:53 UTC
Maybe it does come down to the breed!  Certainly in Gordons it happens - not always but does happen!
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 20.03.07 21:08 UTC
I don't remember it ever happening in 20 years with my Pomeranian's, always at champ shows but never at open shows!
- By Brainless [gb] Date 21.03.07 00:30 UTC
Certainly happens in my breed as the best dogs are likely to be in Open class.  Often the lower classes will have puppies or juniors when there are only two or three classes.
- By rachelsetters Date 21.03.07 07:00 UTC
Good point Barbara - in Gordons we mainly have the three classes - perhaps this also has a bearing that it happens in some breeds because they have less classes) and therefore the 2nd in Open is called in - and in the bigger (number wise) breeds have more classes and older dogs competing in some of the classes.
- By Fillis Date 21.03.07 09:34 UTC
my girl has had a few RBOB when coming second in the class - what annoys me is when it happens, no critique is published as they only print the class winners!
- By rachelsetters Date 21.03.07 09:49 UTC
I think it depends on the class size but Our Dogs is great for printing 1st and 2nd even from Open shows - but it does depend on the class size i.e. if only two in the class don't think the judge does 2nd place critique - Fillis I hope this makes sense!!!

I buy both Our Dogs and Dog World for this reason - and I have had second place critiques from Open Shows printed.

I was stewarding recently and some exhibitors said after awarding a BOB that we should have called in the 2nd of the BOB's class. I thought it was the judge's discretion, but they and she seemed to think it was now the rules.
- By ice_queen Date 21.03.07 17:37 UTC
Nope it's not Lucy it's if the judge wants them back although alot of judges are calling back in 2nds anyway to make sure they are making the right decision :)
- By LucyD [gb] Date 23.03.07 08:59 UTC
Oh good, I thought it was the judges choice, but you never know the rules might have changed since my seminar!!
- By bazb [gb] Date 23.03.07 09:45 UTC
It's up to the judge who they want back, not many open shows actually have a RBOB award
- By LucyD [gb] Date 24.03.07 13:08 UTC
Really? Nearly every show I've ever entered (a lot!) have had RBOB declared, though not always a rosette. :-)
- By bazb [gb] Date 24.03.07 18:27 UTC
We have different experiences then. Usually if there is no award (ie rosette etc) then the judge doesnt declare a BOB. Maybe different customs in different areas?
- By LucyD [gb] Date 25.03.07 17:29 UTC
Could be. I've noticed several shows I've stewarded for, they have a space for RBOB in the catalogue but no rosette, so the judge just declares one. Most shows I've entered have had one too. We are down south near London / Essex. :-)
- By bazb [gb] Date 25.03.07 20:59 UTC
hope that doesnt mean the judge has seen the catalogue!!
- By ClaireyS Date 25.03.07 21:06 UTC
judges get a results book to write down the results which doesnt have names in it.
- By ice_queen Date 26.03.07 06:49 UTC
No rule saying the judge can't see the catalogue ;)  And most catalogues and judges books are standard with BOB, RBOB & BPIB wether the club supplies rosettes or not.
- By LucyD [gb] Date 26.03.07 20:27 UTC
No no, I just tell her there's a space for it! :-)
