Topic Dog Boards / Showing / walking out of the ring
- By Setters4me [gb] Date 19.03.07 11:38 UTC
I have a friend who I have known for some time who has been showing for several years. She has a very firey temper and although she is a lovely person to know, she can get very upset and explode when you don't expect it. We were talking the other day as she had been to a show and her dog had been placed last in a class of 4. She was very upset as she did not think her dog deserved such a low placing. We were then talking hyperthetically (sp?) saying what would have happened if she had stormed out of the ring (I am very suprised she didn't actually do it!) without accepting her rossette? I know the judges decision is final and people should have the grace to accept the judges decision and maybe if the handler cannot accept it, maybe they should no longer be showing BUT if you didn't accept the rossette would you be in trouble? Can someone complain to the secretary?
I have seen someone rip up a reserve CC outside the ring but in full view of other folk and the judge:eek:

I don't know what the KC would think, or if you can be reported but I would say that if the person is taking it that seriously they should give up! I stopped showing (or really cut back) for a couple of years when I no longer got as excited as I should at a CC - I would never be rude, but for a while it just didn't mean much. After a break, and bringing out new young dogs it became exciting again :)  We've all been at the wrong end of the line up on occassion, laugh it off and try again I would say.

I also know someone like this in my breed.  She has, on more than one occasion, ripped cards up and/or been very vocal about the judge and the judging.  She has also walked out of the ring after the first three have been placed saying that if the judge didn't want her in the first three then she wasn't going to hang around for a lower placing!

I don't think that in these cases the KC would intervene.  It's only in cases where the matter gets so out of hand that the person could be reported for bringing the dog game into disrepute.

When I see this sort of behaviour I just tend to say (in a voice loud enough to be heard by them) that I feel sorry for them, in that they obviously have such inadequate lives that they feel they have to behave in this way.  People pay for a judge's decision and have to accept it.

Thants it exactly Debs. I know several people who are very cut throat and no longer even enjoy winning - why do they still show?? I have been trying to point out to my friend that it should be an enjoyable experience for handler and dog, win or loose. I have never heard to KC doing anything, maybe they should??

I have seen this done at a breed show.  The person walked out of the ring before the awards came as far as them.  The judge asked the steward to get them back in the ring so that the card could be handed to them.  It was very funny to watch.

Same here, a lady from a very well known kennel in my breed,  has been witnessed (by me and others) to throw her toys out, when things dont go her way.    At a champ show in the summer,  she had 2 young bitches in MPB & PB  ,   the MP bitch was very unsure and unsetttled, she  would not stand for the judge, she yanked the little girl by the scruff of the neck , then she took the   other in to  "Puppy",   this girl was extremely nervous , when the time came for the judge to go over the   pup,  she would not stand for him,   kept backing away.   so the professional that she is,  this lady said "Oh F*ck  this ,  I am off"   right in front of the judge, snatched the puppy from the judges hand and stormed out.   Lovely lady!!  , I pity her dogs no wonder they are nervous.

I've seen a lot of people (unfortunately) rip up cards/awards etc, I just think it's very sad! There have probably been numerous times when we don't agree with a judges opinion, but you keep it to yourself, and perhaps have B**** about it on the way home in the car . Unusually, the ones I have seen, have usually only been showing a short time (a few years)! Sad, very sad people

I am sure everyone showing has felt hard done to at times, however you just have to smile sewwtly and vow never to go under that judge again. People who storm off soon get a very bad name and very few friends, and when they do win no one bothers to say well done.
As a judge I have had the odd person leave the ring, politely calling them back or asking the steward to get them back usually does the trick.
- By ice_queen Date 19.03.07 18:47 UTC
THere's nothing that can be done but they don't get a very good reputation around the ring....

Making your feelings clear about judging should only be done in the cra on the way home! :D

>rip up cards/awards etc<

*gasp* oh I think that is just the height of Ill manners and ill temper... how ugly and undignified!
I really cant bear a bad sport!
- By universalady Date 19.03.07 19:35 UTC
I'm sure I heard some one say it was against KC rules to rip up a card at a show, or am I dreaming it? Probably, I live in a dream world most of the time!! aswell as it being completely bad sportsmanship!!

I smile sweetly and tell the dogs plenty in the car on the way home how awful the judge was if the judge
didn't place us as well as we deserved to be :)
had this at an open show recently.
Only entered the show because I want to keep the breed classes.
The judge wasn't favourable at all for my dogs - told my friends entered before I went
and I was right I got placed last (well 3rd of 3 and 2nd of 2) in all my breed classes - much to the surprise
of the people I'd already told and the steward that was stewarding...
It was a shock to me that we actually won our AV working class with my younger bitch..
but there was only two in the class, my older bitch got beat by a dog that shouldn't have
beaten her in her AV working class only two in this class too. C'est La Vie.
Pays your money - takes yer chances - another judge another day and it can all be different...
As long as my dogs behave and do all I ask, and we've enjoyed our day out with our friends
the rosettes are a bonus!
- By Brainless [gb] Date 19.03.07 21:46 UTC
Especially as there would probably be another exhibitor that would have loved to have had their place.
- By ClaireyS Date 19.03.07 22:27 UTC
its been tempting a few times, epsecially at open shows when a dog gets pulled out infront of you who is blatantly not better than yours (even to the unprofessional eye !) by a judge who probably doesnt have a clue about the breed standard,  but I pat my dog well done and vow never to go under that judge again
- By Setters4me [gb] Date 20.03.07 11:44 UTC
and it does always seem to happen when you are keen to support the society so that they will continue to keep the classes on and makes you feel you wondered why you bothered in the first place!!! LOL. I did think of a smart reply which you could use on a judge that you don't do well under (NOT that I ever would as I am far too quiet and humble for that!!) "Well, I would have bothered to stand in line for my VHC rossette, had you bothered to read the standard before judging"!!:eek: Naughty I know but I shall think it next time it happens to us!!!

I know of a couple of real beauties that would swear on a stack of bibles that they take losing all in good part...............well boy if storming out swearing under their breathe, ripping up place cards and throwing a tantrum is taking it all in good part well I'm a dutch Uncle.
You darn't even approach this person for the rest of the show as you get a blow by blow account of how it should have been repeated a dozen times.
The worst bit of showmanship I have seen was by an actual class winner who as soon as she was placed dashed out of the ring ( before the other were placed) to attend a stakes class.
We waited for 15 minutes for her to return whilst the judge, steward and eventually the cheif steward were debating whether to give the 2nd, 1st place etc etc
In the end they decided to wait till someone asked her to return where she took the 1st place and eventually took the CC and BOB.

That left a bad taste in one or two mouths:eek::eek:

But if you have paid your money you deserve to go into your other class.

However she could have waited for the rossett at least and then dashed off which I have done before, politly telling the steward and the judge :)

When do you get your critique then?
- By abraham [gb] Date 20.03.07 16:28 UTC
Well i do hope that people dont think that i am a bad loser as i left a ring this weekend when placed 5th as i genuenely thought that only 1st - 4th got something. My problem is that i am new to this showing lark and still find it all a little over welming and i am still very unsure of my handling skills, although i must say in the bred i am in the majority of exibators are really nice people, so i am putting it all down to experience, maybe i should wear L plates?
- By munrogirl76 Date 20.03.07 16:38 UTC
I did that once too :)  It was at an open show, and the catalogue only said 1st-4th, so when they were placed I left the ring - I was mortified when the steward came and handed me a VHC card!! So it's not just you - and I'd been showing about 3 yrs by then too (but in my defence it was the first open show I'd been to that did 5th places!!!). :)

I do think it's shocking bad manners when people stomp out of the ring and throw their cards down though ... :( At the end of the day it's meant to be fun

I remember at our 2nd ever show with our first dog we met a couple with the same breed. We were the only ones there for the class and we were treated to a long conversation about how well their dogs had done at shows etc, all nicey, nicey and friendly as you like. Well, the inevitable happened and our dog beat theirs in the ring, the difference in attitude was scary, judge was rubbish etc card thrown away, they did everything but say 'your dog is cr*p' and this from someone who was secretary of the breed club. I remember saying to my OH on the way home, 'if we ever get like that, its time to give up'

Over the years we saw it many times and I must admit that I just can't believe the bad manners of some people. If you enter any competition where the judging is based on someone's opinion then you have to accept that their opinion might be different from yours and 'suck it up', even within a breed standard there is room for debate. :D

Judges will never please everyone so they might as well please themselves! :-)

Does a judge really have to look at the dog to do a critique?  For one dog it's normally not a problem.

Most of my showing life, at most shows I was in two classes (Handling and breed) and sometimes these did clash.  I once took BOB with a rottie I was handling for someone, litterally took the rosette, thanked and apologiesd to the judge and handed the bitch back to her owner, ran down the lengh of the venue to be handed my aussie who was waiting with my nan to go straight into a handling class.  From the outside I might have been seen as quite a rude handler, I took the glorey of BOB and then left! honest it wasn't like that! :D
- By abraham [gb] Date 20.03.07 19:06 UTC
feel abit better now that a few of you lot have done this as well. I really am not a sore loser, lovely to be placed though dont get me wrong. I show because i meet like minded people, my dog absolutely loves meeting all the other dogs, i am learning loads about my breed and best of all i always take the dog i place best in show home, and usually on the way home we stop off somewhere for a run which usually means one very muddy puppy
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 20.03.07 21:05 UTC
Someone who used to have a breed in the import register did this on a few occassions!!!  I think it's terrible and would never do it no matter how much I disagreed with the judges placement.
- By LucyD [gb] Date 21.03.07 17:35 UTC
I've made a few comments to the steward once - I knew him fairly well, it was a club show, and he'd been apologising for some truly awful judging in the earlier classes already. My boy was placed last, and as the steward cringingly handed me the rosette I smiled and said quietly 'do you think she knows the breed standard', and he just rolled his eyes! He'd also told my friend (who was also last) that she should have won! I wouldn't make comments if I didn't know the people, and I'd never storm out though. I'm not a very good loser, but I save my swearing about the judge for my friends later and the car on the way home. :-D
