What have you been feeding them so far?  If they have diarrhoea they may be getting dehydrated and should see the vet.  Have they been wormed and was the dam properly wormed prior to mating or during?  You cannot put your breed in these sort of posts by the way.

hi yes mother was properly wormed prior to mating and also the pups and mother have been wormed can you suggest what to feed the pups on as i have been trying several different things since they have had the runs shirley

What excatly have you been feeding them ? :)

i have been giving them lactol and introduced a dry puppy food (bakers) egg yolks this morning i gave them tuna
- By Isabel Date 19.03.07 15:15 UTC
Is that tuna in oil?  That might be a bit rich for puppies but it's not something I have ever given so not sure.

Trying several things is not going to help their digestions which need to settle down again.  I use the puppy food version of what I feed the mother, I don't think it much matters which one I think you need to just settle on a make that you know the mother tolerates well, pureed with a lactol mixture.  Starting with a very small amount and building up.  A tiny amount of yoghurt may help settle their digestions following all the swopping about but I think you do need to observe very closely for dehyration as it can overtake them quite fast and if you see any sign of it contact the vet.

If you are uncertain on how to check for dehydration yourself no time at all.

Hi Shirley,

What worming preparations have you used to worm mother and pups? Hopefully these are veterinary wormers, as anything you can buy freely from the supermarket or standard pet stores will not be very effective.

I agree with Isabel on the tuna as it is likely to go straight through them . One of my puppies had the runs I took him to the vet just to be safe (not easy I know with 9).
I weaned my puppies on Nutro puppy mixed with Lactol
I gave egg but scrambled it and made it quite runny with the puppy milk
I also fed baby porridge or rusk in lactol until they eventually ate the puppy food  completely.
Puppies also loved rice pudding before bedtime mixed with thier own milk and carnation milk watered down.
I know people feed frozen then thawed fresh meat but my puppies wouldnt entertain it so i cooked it and they loved it.

Yes, I think egg yolk alone sounds a tad rich too to me but have no personal experience.  I would just scramble a whole one like you with puppy milk but on the whole I just stick to puppy food.  Some posters have recommended the puppy porridge in the past.

I used to start my pups off on weetabix but now find that they all seem to love raw tripe or raw (Pre-frozen) minced beef, the problems I had with anything mixed with milk was that they never wanted the meat meals then as the milky ones were easier to eat, so now they start on meat Even tiny pups wolf down raw  minced meat) and progress to meat and Burns mini bites softened with warm water and then once they have thier appitites i introduce a couple of milky meals. By about 5/6weeks they are eating three meaty meals and two milky ones and they just can't get enough of it!!! The last litter...now 24 weeks old were real piggies...

Am I correct in thinking you have only just started offering them weaning food?  If not what did you start them on at 3 weeks?  If it was the lactol and puppy food, it could be that they have the runs after their second worming (if done at 5 weeks) or as Mum will be starting to wean them are no longer tolerating milk as well as they did, this causing looseness.  Your posts are a little unclear on weaning and worming timescales.

Sometimes if you are feeding too much food and too much milk it will give the pups the runs. I personally would not touch Bakers. Have you tried  rather than scrambled egg an egg custard made with your puppy milk and baked in the oven ? I would only give a teaspoon of Tuna on each pups food and also add some natrual pro-biotic yoghurt to the feeds also.

To test for dehydration if you pull the area on the back of the neck up it should spring straight back down again, if it stays up or is very slow to return you have a case of dehydration. Also the mucous membranes (Eyes and gums) should be a healthy pink not pale and gums should also be warm to touch.

I was always told by vet to start to wean at 3 weeks and found that the pups prefered to get their milk from mum. I have used a complete puppy food soaked with hot water, then mashed up to a porridge consistancy.I take care not to introduce too many differant foods to pups, as this can upset tums. Also if my pups get the runs I take them off all milky food and red meat.I have also found that pups get the runs at around 5 weeks due (so my vet said) their imuinity fom mum decreases and they begin to build up their own.I also give them natural LIVE plain yoghurt (Yeo) which is suposed to replace enzimes in the gut that have been lost due to the runs.Hard boiled egg yokes help to bung them up, and also Ive been told tho Ive never tried it, mashed potatoe. Also I boil a chicken and then cook rice in the stock, and chop the chicken up small and feed the pups this for a day or two.then put them onto their normal puppy food, and mum. I dont give them Lactol or goats milk until they are fully weaned from mum.  Hope this helps, I know the mess and smell is very worrying, but please dont be tempted to try this that or the other as any new food needs to given to pups gradually.  good luck M.C.B
