Hi, I'm new to this board, but having read through some of the messages was wondering if anyone can urgently help.
I am trying to mate my 20 month old male to one of my bitches, all tested and checks done, both been in the ring and done quite well, and pedigrees tie up well. Confirmation and Temp. wise they also both tie up beautifully.
He has not been used before !
The bitch is now in season and it is now day 12, I have tried then together from day 6 and I am getting no reaction from him whatsoever. I have tried to mate them manually and he just stands their gazing at me ! If I let them loose for a natural mating which is what I was hoping for, they just gallop around playing, the bitch is trying so hard she is flirting and standing for him like there is no tomorrow, he just barks at her and runs away.
He is very attached to me and follows me everywhere if able to, and I am now concerned that this could be the problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I do already have bookings for the pups, but just not sure how I'm going to get them.

Mandi,
Can't help you at all, but wondering what breed your dog is, as those on the board who know more than me may want that info?

HI,
Cant help directly either, but there have been posts on this problem in the past - go to search at the top of the page, and type "stud dog" at the top - hopefully somthing useful will come up!
Also, i have seen it written that it may be that your stud knows that the bitch isn't quite ready yet?
Or maybe you could enlist the help of a friend, and leave them all to it - so that you are not in the room i mean!
I really dont know, but thought i may add some suggestions!
Alex
Hi Mandi
It is quite possible she is not ready yet - days 11 to 13 are only the average. If you want to be sure you can get your vet to do a test to see whether she has ovulated yet or is likely to in the next 48 hours. Some dogs just don't know what it is you want them to do, others will do it the minute they consider the bitch is ready The latest I have mated a bitch is day 23 - as the dog was some distance away this involved quite a few trips to the vet for tests.
Re health test results - could you please contact me - click on the name above this message to get my details

Hi, I am by no means an expert on this subject, but I too have read that sometimes a dog will not perform if the owner is in sight, etc. Maybe it is something to do with pack leadership? Anyway, I know that some dogs have funny quirks so maybe someone with more experience can give you more of a clue.
Good luck

You may be too soon and anyway it doesnt do in my opinion to have them together too long ,even a maiden dog should know when she is ready,if he messes about take him away and try again later also some bitches arent ready till quite late on in the season My oldest bitch was mated on the 17 th day once and produced a litter and the 19th day I know this is unusual but thats what happened,is your bitch maiden too? if so that could be a problem too you would be much better putting him with an experienced bitch first.(I mean first mating). Also if your anxious that could be a problem, cant you ask an experienced breeder/friend to help I had to do that once we had been messing around so long we nearly missed the bitch so took her some miles away and my friend got them mated straight away.
Not easy is it ? mating dogs, sometimes dogs just havent read the book :)

I remember when my dog first was going to mate a bitch and I was
in a panic because he would not mate my bitch. However it turned
out she was just not ready. Not all bitches are in the average
10-14 days. You may find the bitch is not going to ovulate until
day 16 or later. What can help is if you have the blood test done
to check to see ovulation day. Then go from there.
My guess would be she is not ready. It is never a good idea to put
a maiden bitch to a dog thats not mated before as neither know what
they are doing. The bitch may even flirt, but they can do this up to
five days before they are actually ready. Get a blood test done if
you are worried. What breed by the way?

I had this problem with my male, and still do. He just hasn't gottn it right. The intrest has been there, just he would do it wrong. I have tried on two bitches and he doesn't get it in the right place. I shaved the hair, I tried assisting, I took him to an experienced breeder and that didn't work. I just hope he gets it next time around, cause he is a beauty and I dream of the pups he could produce. Wish they could read the book!

As discussed in previous threads, I too have a wonderful boy who has been offered all manner of willing females (well 2). Plenty of flirting, drooling, indiscriminate mounting - but no puppies. I used to think I was the only one with this "problem" having been lead to believe that if you put a bitch in season within 500 yds of an entire males pups would result but reading the boards, it doesn't always work the way we would like.
It is sad to think that this part of the line stops here.

It can be realy hard if both the dog, bitch and owner are all without experience! Have you tried the advise of the first couple of answers and had a blood test done? This will at least confirm if/when she is ovulating. Other than that, is there anyone in your area experience in stud work? Lots and lots of dogs need assistance, some just for the first time, and some every time! My firends dog, now aged 7, simply wont mate bitches for her, it is not shyness or a pack leader thing, he has simply got used to me helping and seems to rely on it. He is not a very 'randy' sort of dog, and needs talking into it each and every time, with loads of encouragement, careful palcement, and a good steady hand through the first stages to make sure everything goes th right way!!!
Some breeds are simply harder to mate than others? What breed do you have. I will try to help all I can - how technical about this can we get on the board please, anyone?

Hi I'm still here.
No success as yet ! couldn't try them yesterday as I had to go to a funeral, but I have been putting them together for about 20-30mins or so and if nothing splitting them up for a while and then trying again. I have moved them from the room they were together in and tried them in the garden. but still no joy. I have tried by doing almost all the work for him (if you know what I mean) but even at that point (whilst in !!) he shows no interest. He absolutely hates the thought of mounting her, even If I lift him on. Please don't laugh but to get them as far as I have so far I had to place a box under the bitch for him to put his front feet on !! I think i'm probably fighting a losing battle, I did also a couple of months ago try to mate him to my older bitch (who's the mother of the one I am currently trying him with) but no joy there either. At this minute they are together out of my sight but well within in earshot, and I could hear a pin drop.
Thanks for all the advice so far. Will keep trying for a while longer.
All the best for now

Boy do I feel for you Mandi!
Isn't it fustrating! I went through the whole thing some months back and don't relish the thought of trying again anytime in the future. Too bad that it seems some of these dogs have lost their basic instincts. It's the same with certain breeds of pups that are born. One of my friends who breeds collies said that if left to their own devices they would have long been extinct. Not very encouraging, huh? I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you!
