Im after buying some clippers, looked on ebay etc and not sure what would be best. Reading through the argos there are some Wahl clippers with scissors and small kit for £30 which seems good value although I dont want the best i certainly dont want the worst either, has anyone got any suggestions please?:o)

You'd do much better to invest in a pair of thinning scissors rather than clippers. :)  Superdrug do a reasonable pair for about £8 last time I looked. :)

Erm ... I didn't think that Golden Retrievers should be clipped? Just brushed and combed, with excess feathering thinned and trimmed with scissors?

right, was a bit unsure of what was required with her, shes almost 15 months old now and the hair under her ears is getting tangled even though i brush her daily? ive just today cut two tangles out........ so you guys think thinnig scissors would be best?

JG sometimes a neutered Golden Retriever dog or bitch can look like candy floss (enough reason to consider not neutering! :( ) and can be tidied with thinners.  A clipped Golden not only looks awful but gives the owner a bigger headache when the top coat and undercoat starts growing through together. :(

The hair under her ears can be trimmed with thinners, but should be combed, not brushed, a couple of times a week.  It's won't knot then. :)

As this is on the showing board, are you planning to show her???????

Thanks Val, was going to impulse buy but glad i spoke to you guys first:o)......... so thinning scissors and comb it is, bit worried about doing my first nail clipping also if you can give me some pointers pleeease

Nail clipping - best thing is to take just a fraction off at a time. Goldies have black nails don't they? So you can't see the quick. Just take the very ends off, and keep doing that regularly, rather than trying to take a lot off and risking cutting the quick (the nerve / blood supply that runs down inside the nail). Cut the nail parallel with the floor, and eventually aim to keep the nails just a little bit off the floor.

Goldens should never be clipped.  All you need is thinning scissors and straight scissors.  If I were you, I'd invest in a grooming video/DVD from one of our breed specialists and learn to trim her correctly. You will be very proud of the results and the fur will be much more easily managed trimmed in this way.

I have learned my best show trimming from Jenny Frankland-Mace (Purbarn Golden Retrievers), but as she always says, it is worth knowing how to trim your Golden even if you are not showing as it keeps your dog tidy and stops them bringing all that mud on their feet into the house. She has a website. Just go into merchandise. She also gives trimming demonstrations to the breed clubs. The DVD/video is very easy to follow.
