Having bought an expensive PC three years ago mainly because of rescue work etc but then getting thoroughly hooked on it all I always had my PC maintained by PC world and they documented for me all my upgrades etc.
Anyway some months ago I was desperate for a quick repair to it and it couldnt be done for about five days I got someone from the local paper who advertised PC repairs,anyway I asked if it would invalidate my maintenence agreement with PC world and he said yes but as I only had a few months to run on it I decided to risk it.
Anyway My pc was repaired very quickly but I found it getting slower and slower anyway when My Son came home after being away a while he said the repair man should put the PC right as something was badly wong,then we discovered our quality processor had been swapped for a cheap one and sound card was missing and replaced with a cheap one.
All the parts tp my Pc were listed on our guarantees Im really annoyed now as we feel we have been defrauded.
It has been an expensive lesson as I can no longer trust this person and have now invested in a brand new computer,which will be only maintained by PC world.
Also I am worried if he had my PC with all,not just my private things but recues how can I be sure its safe if i couldnt trust him with the parts,I would never have known if gareth hadnt come home and found out.
Anyway just thought I would warn evryone to be careful when trusting people with your PC.

he wasnt authorised to remove the parts and replace them with a lesser quality

2 options

go to the police and tell them. let the courts deal with it

call the guy and tell him that you know what he did and that you want all moneys returned that you may have payed him and also the return and refitment of the stolen parts or you will inform the police

or a 3rd and final option
forget all about it, put it down to experience, and let him carry on doing it to other people as well
although this is not an option i personally would take

Yep I'd challenge him 'nicely' about it and if that fails report it.

don't forget to tell trading standards as well.

Did you have any personal or financial information on your computer's hard drive when you took it in??? He could have not only stolen parts, but decided to deal in a form of Identity theft. :( :( :( You wouldn't necessarily know what he did because the info remained intact on your computer, but he could have sold it on to others. :( :(
Identity theft in the US is a growing problem --- people's Social Security numbers are used in credit card applications and cell phone purchases. Thousands of dollars are racked up in an unknowing individual's name. I don't know what is used for ID verification in the UK, but I would be cautious.

At the very least, you might consider calling the police to let them know about this incident. You could find out if this guy has a 'rap' sheet or it might stop him conning someone else. :( :( :(

Mattie sorry to hear all this, I would have to report this guy to stop him doing this all over again to another unsuspecting person and fight for your goods back .or money difference

this is so wrong please do not leave it report it to the police. this is so bad i deal with computer that is my busness please call the police i do not think you should call him just call the police he had a job to do not take out parts of your computer. you have pc world report so the police will be able to tell what you had in your computer also did you get a bill with what this man if you call call him that did to your computer go to the police and tell them what this man has done and get the police to sort this out. what is this world coming to
i do not see why you have had to bye a new computer when your one was fine if the man had done he job you would not of had to.

Contact the paper who carried his ad, speak to someone at management level, not just the telesales people. They will want to know they are advertising for this kind of people, and you may find that the newspapers advertising compensation scheme (cant remember its proper name) may be willing to cover some or all of the cost. They might alos do a story warning others of this nasty scheme.

I would only use somebody who has been recommended by somebody you know that has had work done on their PC as anybody can advertise themselves as a 'computer expert'. A lot of people think they know how to mend and build PC's but as in your case has done the opposite.

I would give him the opportunity to put things right but if you get no success straight to the police and trading standards.

I'm not saying this has happened but are you sure that the parts were in there before you took the pc to this chap to be repaired?

I know of at least 10 occasions when PC World has charged for work and parts but when the pc has been opened up at home the work hasn't been done and the parts aren't in there. My dad got stung to the tune of £3000 by PC World for work they caimed to have done and various cards they said they'd installed. When dad got the pc home my brother opened it up and went mad - nothing had been done.

Chris always works on our computer and my brother always does all of his bits and pieces in front of people or videos what he's doing - he had one chap claim he hadn't put an expensive card in when my brother had done it and showed him the video of it being installed.

I hope you do manage to get your money back from whoever it is that's messing you around.

i now what you are saying about pc world i would not take a computer there if you paid me, but as far as i can see from the post from when the computer came back it was running very slow so i would say that the parts was in the computer that pc world said there was. so i would put this down to the man that done the work on the computer

I agree it looks like this man did change the parts but how can it be proved? Surely that's going to be difficult unless the police have had other people complain about him.
