Has anyone had any success puting off a season, and if so, how long is it put off for? Am considering it as bitch just coming in to season but its a month too early for her passport to be valid:mad: and the sire is Overseas!  Anyone dones this , views good or bad please:cool:

Delvesteron will do this, but don't know if the enxt season will be normal, or when it will be.

Here is Intervets datasheet: http://www.intervet.co.uk/Products_Public/Delvosteron/090_Product_Datasheet.asp

Hi Sam
I did this once - never again, my bitch ended up with pyometra.  However, that was several years ago and things may have changed.  I personally don't think it's a good idea to interfere with the hormones of a bitch that you want to breed from, but I reiterate, it's a personal opinion.  Have you discussed this with your vet?

No chance the people would board her for you until the passport kicks in.  she would only be a month in whelp on returning.

A friend of mine did this 2 years ago, the bitch missed when she was mated and hasn't had a season since  although before she was very regular.

Not sure I would mess with nature.

This is what the data sheet says:

"Suppression of heat

A single injection as soon as possible after the onset of pro-oestrus is seen. Following the injection, bleeding, vulval swelling and attractiveness to dogs should gradually decrease and stop within 5-7 days. The time for return to oestrus in the majority of bitches will be 5-6 months on average, but in approximately 3% of bitches the interval will be shorter than 3 months and in 1% it will be longer than 12 months."

I would prefer to wait until the next season naturally, as in effect that is the earliest she would come in after being injected, and possibly it would be longer.

That could be a solution, couldn't it?  If she's only just started her season, then you've probably got almost a couple of weeks until she's ready, and if her passport comes into effect in a month, then you'd only have to leave her for a couple of weeks.  It would depend on the character of your bitch as to whether it would effect her - and of course, the good will of the dog's owners.

I did it many years ago and would never do it again. From then on the bitches cycles were not regular and she had silent seasons. In the end I had to have her spayed as she developed an early stage pyo. Never again

My collie girl had the jag to put off her season as she came in the day before my boy was booked in to be neutered and I didn't want him sore and upset at the same time. She got the jag on the first day of her season, it took about 3 or 4 days for her to come out of season. She came back in again 4 months later, was mated once and had a healthy litter and was spayed 3 months after that. I used it once on a borzoi bitch too who came in just before we were going on holiday (with ehr and several dogs). The twice I've used it, it's worked well with no ill effects and both bitches have went on to have a normal season after that.
