I was speaking to my new vet about their policy regarding dew claw removal as a routine thing in puppies.  They said they never do this only if there's looking to be a problem with it flapping and getting caught or ripped as the dog gets older.

How many CD-ers get dew claws removes as a routine thing, and how many wait and see if they need it to be done?

Yes I have it done routinely.  Removing flapping, disconnected ones later may not be such a big thing although it will of course involve an anaesthetic but if a fixed one requires removal at a later date it will involve bone surgery which is far more risky.  If you use the search facility you will find previous discussions on this issue.  Here is one for instance.

I wish my girls had theirs removed as pups, they do get caught and with my first chi Toby all those years ago he caught his in his eyelid, he was screaming,i had to unhook him,it was awful!

Most breeders do there own dewclaws as there is no legal requirement for a vet to do it.  You may know and experienced breeder who would do it for you.

I have always have the vet do them Barb, but last time when I got them done , I was ready to take the scissors out his hand and do them myself.  He was doing it all wrong. I had to hold the pup and push the thumb out and actually show him where and what to cut off.  !!!

I could do them no problem but still always take them all to the vets as I am always a bit scared incase something went wrong like an infection or something even if it sounds daft :-)

This seems a recurring theme with dew claws and formerly docking that vets were just not very good at it, and that an experienced long time breeder was better.

I know that many people of many docked breeds before the law changed used to go to a certain local breeder who had a reputation for being good at the job.

I always have mine removed at 3 days old. From my 1st litter.  I hate them.

I guess mine will have to stay as our vet doesn't do them and I'm not sure how I would get another vet to just do that without changing, as I am otherwise happy with our vet. They don't stick out on Cavs like on some of the smooth coated breeds, so as long as I remind the puppy buyers that they have them it should be ok I guess.
