Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Young Lowchen dog - after mating
- By Grasshopper [gb] Date 15.03.07 19:01 UTC
Any Lowchen experts out there who could advise me please.  I intend to purchase an 8 months old Lowchen dog puppy for a family pet.  The present owner is keen for us to allow her to use him on two occasions for stud purposes when he is mature enough.  I have no intention of showing or mating him, and would have preferred to have him castrated really.  However, if I agree to this stud arrangement, will he thereafter be looking for a bitch, or just revert to being a lovable pet ?
My previous dogs (Bernese Mountain dogs) have been castrated at 6-7 months of age, very successfully.
Thanks for any comments.

I don't have lowchens but I can say that my borzoi boys that were used at stud didn't change one bit. They were still loving, soft as butter dogs. The only bitches they got excited about were ones in season and ready for mating  :)

Henry is entire, has been used a few times, and gets a bit keen on my bitch most evenings, but he doesn't usually take it to extremes like trying out the sofa or our legs or cushions etc. A stern NO usually makes him give up on her till the next evening! He doesn't mark inside the house even when Ellie is in season either. :-)

It is the million dollar question. Some dogs will - some dogs won't. Why risk it when you can buy a puppy and not have the hassle of a) being available when someone else demands you attend and b) a possibly unhappy dog every time he notes there is a bitch in season? :)

not had any problem with my dogs when bitchs are in season or my stud dog,no change  tempertment.but all my the dog were laid back and have lived with bitches so they get to know untill the day was right to mate a bitch.my dog stay with the girls untill day 10 and back with them day 19..

but some owners can not afford the total price of a dog so a dog on loan{this in the dog world word term}may suit them better.and the dog is only go to be away for a couple of hours  or a day or two at the most for stud work not like a bitch on loan where she go  back to the breeder  up to 2 weeks before the the puppies are due to when the puppies go to their new homes,

i am loaning my puppy to my sister in law on the contract that i have her back once a week for trainnig and on breeding terms as well. but i am luckly she only lives 2 miles away.so i will be see her weelky so she still know me and my dogs.plus i am doing the ame with a boy puppy to.
some breeder do this like in our breed the gene pool low so we got to keep back a good bitch and dog to keep the lines and breed going.

Some dogs, usually in very experienced hands, are OK after being used at stud but I would never ask to use any of my dogs that I've put in pet homes as I've seen too many males with unacceptable behaviour for the average pet owner after being used on a bitch.  The changes have included peeing indoors to mark their territory (I've even seen a Pomeranian jump onto a sofa, onto a side table and pee on the table lamp!) and a brilliant recall in the park disappear completely as the dogs would chase everything with 4 legs just in case it was in season.  Many of the dogs that I know in the grooming parlour had become impossible for their owners to live with after being persuaded by 'the lady round the corner' to use their dog.

I would advise you to try and find a pet that you can buy outright without terms.  I would consider it to be very selfish of the breeder to put these terms on a pet dog and not something that I would consider. :(

Yes along those lines, without mentioning breeds or names, a friend of mine has a dog who last year was used for the first time. He was a top winning dog in the breed and he was fully mature, several years old. Since he's been used she's been unable to show him as he just cannot concentrate at all at shows anymore, all he's interested in is looking for bitches. She recently tried again after leaving it for many months but he was still the same. So a brilliant show career gone -and this is a very experienced owner. Obviously it doesn't matter for a pet dog if he can't be shown, but my point is that at times yes it CAN really change a dog and there is no way of knowing in advance.

If you agree to this stud arrangement, no one can really answer your question. Dogs are like our human counterparts some behave like gentleman some think of nothing else and will try it on with anything walking past. :-D  Unfortuanately some male dogs don't care if it is a cushion, tree, human leg, or a child, (I used to get accosted by a rampant lab many moons ago, it was a nightmare for us all in the neighbourhood) you won't know if you are on the way to having a none problematice stud or a complete nuisance. My mothers and brothers entire dogs are gentlemen and no problem, but there is no way of ever knowing for sure.

If you didn't really intend to have a stud dog then don't feel pressured to get into it, not unless he is a particularly fine specimen with the best bloodlines for the breed perhaps it may be warranted, but then I doubt he would be being sold on to a pet home and should be with a fine breeder as stock.

It can very much depend on the dog.  A boy I bred wasn't used until he was 6 1/2 years old and he improved once he had been used.  He was a lot more relaxed around bitches, as he knew what a ready bitch was and no longer got interested in ones that were not in season.

Never had any problems with any of my stud dogs, the only one that I'm having problems with is the one that stil hasn't been used yet!
