Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / very distressed dog - help
- By xenaqueen [gb] Date 12.03.07 23:10 UTC
Don't know really where to start ....

I have three dogs - male nearly ten (top dog) bitch nearly two - male pup ust 5 mnths.

Old dog is usually a very strong top dog indeed. He keeps the others in line very well not aggresive but very assertive - when he's had enough he lets them know by a low growl and they usually listen and behave for a while etc etc..

BUT

for the past two/three days the pup is sitting about the place letting out loud high pitch barks and whines for no obvious reason ( a bit like he's frustrated or something ) i'm tempted to put it down to his teeth - he's cutting some big ones at the back..... when pup does this - the old dog who normally doesn't bat an eyelid at anything - either gets up and runs out side or hides away in a corner trying to hide his head and acts all distressed. He's realy not happy - where ever I have gone tonight he's been there - this is really really odd behaviour for him......

ANY ideas as to what is going on here would be welcome - I'm becoing really stressed with the whole situation too....

Maybe the older dog's upset because the pup's distressed (eg due to cutting teeth) and as top dog he doesn't know what to do about it?

There's not any noises they can hear that you aren't hearing are there? (having said that I don't know how you'd know, sorry).

Only other thing I can thing is vet checks I'm afraid, it does sound a bit odd. Sorry, not much help.

Firstly, I would pop your 5 monther down to the vet to check that it is his teeth that is causing him to make high pitched noises.

Adult dogs do get extremely distressed when a pup or other dog is in pain, just a cautionary note an adult dog may also turn on a pup or one of it's pack, to make it quiet or put it out of it's misery!  It is a natural instinct so I personally would not leave them alone until you have sorted out what is causing your pup pain, at the very least you can get some teething gel from your vet, it may be an ear infection or any number of other things though so take him to the vet.

Thank you all !!!!!

The pup is still at it tonight in between chewing like a mad man........

Old dog still runing off where ever he can......Think a trip to vets will be on the cards.....old dog was due to go back as he has recently been treated for a really sore throat - maybe he still very much under the weather !

Wish they could speak and tell us - it would make life much easier......

Perhaps your older dog has something amiss with his ears and the pups noise is causing him pain ?

Hope it gets resolved soon :)
