Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Walking Two dogs together

I would like to try and training my two dogs to walk together (they are 12 months and 6 months), they have up until now been walked seperatley.  Does anyone have any advice on how to train two dogs to walk together, I have never done this before?  I have a split lead as many years ago I used to walk my Retriever and Cocker together, however they were rescue dogs and someone else had trained them (lucky me).  Any advice would be appreciated.

I'd start off by taking another person with you to walk one of them beside you, so you each only have a single dog to concentrate on. This way they'll get used to being walked together (ideally this would have been done once a day from the outset, as well as the separate walks) without all the stress being on a single person.

I walk all three of my large breed dogs together, one of them is a complete head case though! As soon as she shes another dog shes pulls pulls pulls, she only wants to sniff them and play!
But when they are all walking nicely together it is very enjoyable and people walk passed with 'ahh wow' written on their faces!!

I have never used a twin lead for my dogs, I just put all the leads in one hand and I make sure I walk on the right hand side of them so that they walk side by side, I have to make sure that they are all level with each other, as if one gets a little ahead the others try to catch up!
I always reward them with a free run when I walk them all together as it is hard for them to have sniffs and wees when they are walking in line together.
GOOD LUCK  xx

What worked for me was having one dog each side of me.  Both dogs are individually good on the leash and that is a prereq before putting them together.  However brat from hell (7 month old pup) will jump all over my boy given half a chance when they are together;  therefore I have him on my left (the position he has always been used to) and her on the right so that initially my body could act as a block if necessary.  I'm lucky in that they are competitive in the sense of wanting whatever treat I have in my pocket and work doubly hard to please when they are together in case one of them gets and the other misses out!  (Long may that continue!)  Walking the pup on the right has not proved a problem - she adapts well and walks on the left when on her own.  I do this with the dogs anyway (walking on both sides) to ensure there is no one-sided development of their musculature.

Mine have a three month age gap.I walked mine at first one each side of me using the same methids you use to train one dog . Then I walked them both on my left on seperate leads so I can handle them and train them still as individuals rather than having one dog pull the other around.  I do the change direction thing sit wait and all that with my two while we walk. If they are very ott I use the head halter.
