HOW MANY TIMES CAN A STUD DOG SERVE A BITCH IN ONE SEASON, ONLY MY FRIEND HAD HER BITCH {WESTIE} MATED 10 TIMES BY THE SAME STUD, SURELY THIS IS WRONG, BY THE WAY SHE OWNS BOTH, I WAS ALWAYS LED TO BELIEVE THAT TWICE WAS QUITE SUFFICIENT, BUT IM PROBARLY WRONG.

There is no wrong or right. Many people are happy with two matings, usually with a day in between them. However often people will just let a dog and bitch get on with it, if they own both. The biggest disadvantage that I can see is not being able to narrow down the due date :-)

Hi Guest
Sarah is right, most people are happy with 1 or 2 matings.
The only down side I can think of for 10 matings is that it is possible for the bitch to get impregnated more than once (if you see what I mean) and I think that this could lead to birth complications if there are lots of pup's of different ages. But I could be wrong.

Hi Trevor
as already said the 'normal' times to mate a bitch is twice...if the bitch owner knows when the bitch is ready.
However more matings to be sure is not a problem at all, the bitch can only be ready at one time during her season and so can only get pregnant once.
We own stud dogs and if using one on our female we allow more than two matings..we have particularly flirty females and stud dogs who will mate at the drop of hat never mind a lift of the tail..so 3 or 4 times is not unusual.
10 matings sounds over the top to be honest and I'm suprised the female would be willing this amount of times and that the stud dog too for that matter.

Isnt there a risk of infection if a bitch is mated too many times?
My girl has just been served twice (good ties) over the last three days and that will be her lot.
Fingers crossed !!LOL

A bitch can get fertilised on more that one occasion, in fact it does not have to be to the same dog either!

:)

But nature has worked it so that the resulting puppies maturation should be similar, after all viable puppies can be born as much as a week early and a week late, so there is plenty of margin for egggs that are released over 2 or 3 days, and that remain viable for two more days to not be too far apart in age to cause problems. A bitch can conceive to two or more dogs if mated during this time.

my god it amazes me what some people can put thier dogs through, twice is certainly enough, too many times can have a large vairashion in the litter, give the bitch an infection, tell your friend from me to leave this poor little bitch along, i feel sorry for her. sheryl (westie ways)
