Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / HELP- PRT Incessent Barking at people at the front door!

Its a horrid noise... incessent high pitched barking buffy whos ar parsons terrier is back to making such a din!  Atanyone who comes near the front door, especially if they knock or ring the bell!

We had got it so good but now he has sussed it and ignores us!! She's fab at going in the front room when someone is at the door behind her baby gate, but does all this while barking at the loudest possible decibel she can achieve and only when she can see the person does she stop (if your lucky).  She has to sit behind the gate or she'd be off down the road as soon as I open the door (which she does at first opportunity, looking for the cat that lives over the road!), and not everyone is keen on greeting a yappy terrier!

We have tried everything, the best thing is the spray collar but this is only good when it actually on ( she knows when its switched off) the batterys are expensive and dont last very long. also the spray box is quite big on a little dog and does stop her from settling properly the rest of the time! The canisters are good but she know when its not there and when they have run out! and I always hide it from her when i use it! I have tried clicking and treating, ignoring her everything works for a little while! I have tried noise distraction but she can't hear it above her own  noise.

The main issue here is not only her barking, and it driving us and the neighbours mad is that I am expecting a baby in July and i'm not sure how i am going to cope with her and a baby with people at the door, and if she constantly waking the baby i'll go mad. I love her to bits but she is doing my nut and i am starting to dread the door bell going. You cant think or talk above her noise! Professional help has been sort before but we have used up all her methods!

PLEASE HELP!!

Hi,

Can't help much I'm afraid but have a bit of an anecdote - my sister still lived at home when pregnant, and for about a year after the baby was born, whilst her and her partner looked for their own house. We had 2 Dobermanns at the time who barked a fair bit themselves but the baby didn't blink an eye when they used to go nuts barking at the front door, squirrels, etc, when she was asleep - can only think that she was very used to hearing them barking whilst in the womb so wasn't bothered by it at all! You can but hope! Hopefully you'll have got the barking sorted by then anyway :)

Good luck!

We found the Dog Off high pitched alarm worked very well!  I think we bought it from Pets at Home!

Alfie is just the same:rolleyes: I dread the doorbell ringing, he goes berserk. Must be a JR thing! If the person at he door comes in he stops and sniffs them all over then calms down. It is always the door he has a problem with, if you are outside of it you are the enemy, once you are inside you are ok! The postwoman gets an earful from him every day but as she is permanently plugged into her phone for her whole round, not sure she is that bothered!!!
