Topic Dog Boards / Health / Toilet probs in GR

Hi
My brothers dog keeps messing during the night on the carpet. I think that because the dog only gets 5 mins walks a few times a day and that Max isn't having chance to actually have a poo whilst out. I know my dog takes her time, the right place, right sniff etc before she decideds to go. My brother doesn't agree with me, but says it's Max's food. He's fed on JWB & had been put onto the senior food recently & when he does go it's little black ones. Max is only 3, so I don't know why he's on it anyway, unless I'm wrong!
any suggestions will be great.

If your brother is *certain* that his dog has sufficiently relieved itself throughout the day and again before bedtime, then TBH I'd be pointing him towards the vet to have the dog checked over.

If he genuinely believes this behaviour is down to diet alone (which IMO would be odd!) then perhaps he should investigate making some gradual changes to see if it makes a difference, i.e. the timing / number / volume of each meal.

However, if this is a sudden behavioural change in the dog, then IMO the vet should be the first port of call.

regards, Teri :)

Thanks teri, I've let my brother know. The reason he's on senior is because he picked up the wrong bag! My brother was amazed this kind of site exists, it's all alien to him, but he is impressed!
Just to show my ignorance, what it IMO ??

IMO = in my opinion :)

I think your initial idea was probably right - 5 minutes walk a few times a day certainly doesn't sound nearly enough exercise for a (presumably healthy?) 3 year old dog.  However, if the exercise level hasn't changed and the messing at night is relatively new, then I would agree a medical check would be a good idea.

My Goldens are all fed JWB and they don't mess in the house.  However they are also given two walks a day for up to an hour and get free running.  Suggest he starts giving the poor boy some good exercise and then complain about the food after that.
