Topic Dog Boards / Health / Marley and the ear problem

Marley, my poodlexbichon has an ear infection :( We've been to the vets today and had anti-inflammatory jab and drops and a lovely £80 bill  I hope it all kicks in soon because he feels soooo sorry for himself :( not eating or driving me up the wall with his usual mad play with the others etc!

I just wish I knew how to make him more comfortable. .. any suggestions?

P.s he's a rescue and has always been really loving to me, but since I've had to put drops in his ear and clean it (gently) he's stayed well away and looks at me like I'm Cruella deVil :( I know it huuurts but thought he may want a bit of affection/comfort but I think he blames me??? Am I being an oversensitive prat? :D

Oh poor Marley, he probably feels really sorry for himself - probably his staying away from you is nothing to do with you putting drops in his ear, he is probably just very uncomfortable :(  poor little man
Hope he gets better soon and give him a big hug from me xx

Worth always keeping an eye on his ears.  Both breeds can inherit very narrow ear canals that can be prone to infection. :(  It can be helped if you (or your groomer) keeps any hair growing in the ear canal plucked.

Hiya, I'm a groomer myself so have been keeping his hairy lil lugholes clear. Vet thinks he's most likely had infections in the past (pre-rescue) and I'd agree as he went loopy the second he saw the ear dropper bottle, before it had gone anywhere near him, poor little guy. :( He's still hiding in a small soft crate at the moment, pretending not to be here :)

Will give him a hug from you as soon as he'll let me Maria!

Have you used Thornit? :)

Have just tried looking up Thornit - I see it is a powder?  Do you use it as a precautionary measure or only when ear looks messy?  I am asking because my dog would not let me put any liquid down her ear - I was supposed to wash her ears out and then put drops in.  Thankfully her ears didn't get to the point of inflamation and seemed to clear up themselves.  However I don't believe a problem just goes away completely.  The vet said she would have to sedate Meg if it got really bad for treatment.  So anything that would help prevent us getting to that stage would be useful.  I can put my finger in her ear - no problem.

Hi Val, yes I used to use it with my elderly bichons, but haven't used for a while as none of my present dogs have had a problem.. til now! I have ordered some now though! :D

Thanks xx :)
